Sydney's IMAX Theatre in Darling Harbour is home to the world's largest movie screen at a whopping 80 storeys high! The building itself is the shape of an eye, decorated in yellow and black aluminium checks, which was designed by and Australian architect by the name of Lionel Glendinning. The IMAX Theatre shows films in both 2D and 3D although it's not like your conventional cinema screenings.
IMAX is open 365 days a year and shows films on the hour, every hour, from 10am until 10pm. The cinema seats 540 people at a time and there is plenty of leg room.
The screen is made from vinyl which is painted with a reflective silver coating, stretched over scaffold frames. The films are projected on 15 perforation/70mm film which means nothing to me but is apparently the largest film format that exists today and the 3D projector uses 2 x 15,000 watt bulbs, which have their own cooling system due to the immense heat they give off.
When you arrive at the IMAX, the paying desk is located on your left hand side as you enter the building. Once you have paid for your ticket, you can walk straight ahead and purchase the usual cinema sweeties, drinks or popcorn. Upstairs is where you enter the cinema which can be reached either from left or right stairs from the lobby. Once upstairs, you are handed a set of 3D glasses and everyone takes their seats in the huge theatre. It feels quite strange having the glasses on to begin with but everyone else is wearing them so it doesn't matter, I still couldn't help having a giggle to myself though.
I went to see "Titanic" at the Sydney IMAX… no, not the one with Leo… it was a short documentary film on the actual Titanic. I thought the effects were extraordinary and my favourite 3D effect was the bubbles which came out of the screen towards you and you felt like you could raise your hand and burst them.
There appears to be something to suit all the family, young or old and I would highly recommend the IMAX to anyone who hasn't been before, a truly amazing experience and most definitely a cut above the red and green cardboard specs we used to get.
