Pull up a chair - this is a comedy of errors !

i- to-i is a company specialising in offering volunteer placements around the world. Although they cater mostly to students wanting to take a gap year or similar, they offer placements to all ages. Their placements include teaching, conservation, environmental and community projects. For some of the placements a TEFL course is compulsory and can be taken either on an intensive weekend course or online.

I found the i-to-i website whilst looking for a TEFL course. I was thinking of returning to Greece and thought a TEFL qualification would be useful. I booked for the weekend course, which I took in Leeds in March 2004.

The course consisted of 20 hours training in 2 days, so was very intensive and hard work, but lots of fun. There were far too many people on the course for the size of the room used. There was just a circle of chairs - no tables - and we were cramped in together, having to work on our knees and on the floor - not ideal when you are having to prepare lesson plans etc. Having said that, the course was fun, good experience at standing up in front of your peers, and the tutor was excellent.

The group was made up mostly of students, though there were a couple of other 'mature' students like myself. The 20 hour practical course is followed up by a 20 hour grammar module, which you do on your own at home - which was pretty hard work - even for someone with a grammar school education! A 20hour certificate is issued, and is followed up by a 40hour certifcate once the grammar module is successfully completed.

Having spoken to the tutor and other staff at length regarding the reasons I was taking the TEFL course (ie to return to Greece), I later discovered once I got to Greece that this certificate is not worth the paper it is written on in Europe unless you also have a university degree!

With the TEFL course completed, I decided to take on one of the volunteer placements before heading back to Greece. After months of deliberation, I eventually chose a project in Peru - The Eco-friendly Garden & School project in Lima. The blurb described mornings of teaching English and afternoons "harvesting in the orchard or mixing organic fertilisers". This project seemed ideal as it covered my gardening interests as well as giving me experience in teaching.

I rang the Leeds office numerous times trying to speak to someone who knew something more about the project, but they could tell me little more than was in the brochure. I eventually travelled to Leeds to attend one of their 'open days', having been told it would be a chance to speak to people who had been on the projects and knew the countries well. Having paid my 5 quid entry fee, the 'open day' turned out to be just a sales pitch to lots of students and would-be travellers. There was nobody there who had ever BEEN to Peru (including the 2 owners of the company), although I did have a chat with one of their staff members who was from Ecuador.

As I had pretty much committed myself to doing the project (I was selling my house and putting all my stuff into storage) I signed on the dotted line and paid the appropriate fee - a cool 1,395 quid - for a 3 month project. This fee did NOT include air fare or accommodation in Peru (payable locally). It DID include travel insurance, placement in the school and with a family, one week of Spanish lessons and orientation (during which accommodation was free) and the services of their rep in Lima.

FOUR WEEKS before I was due to fly to Peru, I received an email saying that they were no longer providing Spanish lessons, the orientation was cut down to 1 day, and only that one day was free accommodation. I was offered a discount of US$250 on my accommodation payments. This obviously left me no time to sort out any alternative Spanish lessons, although I had been using some tapes etc.

TWO WEEKS before I was due to leave, i-to-i phoned to say that they had just discovered that despite the fact that they had put me on a 3 month project Nov -Feb, the school would be closing at Xmas for the summer holidays! They asked if I wanted to cut my project short or move onto something else for the remainder of my stay. I decided to move on to the Lima orphanage project. They also said that I 'might be disappointed' in the eco-garden! Oner of their staff had eventually visited the project and came back saying the garden wasn't up to much. They suggested I may enjoy gettin it into shape!

Arrival in Peru was a great adventure (including being overbooked on the flight and having to spend a night in Amsterdam!) and I settled in with the family I was to spend the next 3 months with.

On my first day at the school, despite my co-ordinator saying the school was 'thrilled' to have a volunteer, they didn't know what to do with me and at one stage I was left sitting in the school yard for over an hour! They had not worked out any kind of programme for me and I eventually had to go round knocking on classroom doors to make myself a timetable with the various English classes. Having said that, I loved the teaching side of things. I taught 6 groups of 10 year olds (with 50 girls in each class!) and 6 groups of senior girls aged 11 - 14 years. The teachers were supposed to stay in class with me, but most sneaked off for coffee and left me to it - but the girls and I had lots of fun!

As for the 'eco-garden' - WELL - in the corner of the school yard, against the wall, was a rock hard patch of dirt about 20feet by 10 feet. There was a fence around this area and the only thing to give you any idea that it may be a garden were the words 'eco-garden' painted on the wall ! There was not a single green thing in it! They suggested I may like to dig it all over and set it up again - but as the school was closing in 6 weeks and would not re-open until April, there seemed little point in leaving it all to die!

As Xmas was approaching, I was looking forward to my move on to the orphanage. There were 6 other volunteers already working on this project and I had visited a couple of times. What i-to-i had not told anyone was the fact that 80% of the kids are NOT actually orphans, but live there because their families could not support them. This 80% of kids were returning to their families for the Xmas holidays and beyond! By the week before the holiday there were sometimes only 4 kids to 6 volunteers in the classes! There seemed little point in me going on to this project, where volunteers outnumbered the kids!

The school were operating a 3 week summer school, and it was suggested I help with that instead. I was happy to, but nobody could tell me an exact date it would begin, or which teachers would be operating it! In the end, I went off travelling, with the proviso that my co-ordinator would email me with the start date.
I received no email and got back to Lima to discover the summer school had started the week before - so I took off and did some more travelling.

I had a FANTASTIC time in Peru, did lots of travelling, but would NOT recommend i-to-i to anyone - although the weekend TEFL course is good - and much better use to you that doing it online (which ALL the other volunteers had done and therefore had no practical experience of planning and presenting lessons)

I complained when I got back to the UK and after several letter received a refund of almost a third of what I'd paid.

If you're thinking of doing a volunteer project - research well (I DID but still suffered!) and insist that you speak to people who have actually BEEN to the places they are selling!

NOTE: We discovered once in Peru that NOT A PENNY of the fees we paid went to the projects there at all (they DID offer to pay for a new toner cartridge for the orphanage printer!) - i-to-i is a money making concern and just 'makes donations' to selected charities and projects.

The co-ordinators in Peru did the best they could and were very committed to the projects - my complaint was with the UK side of the organisation, although staff were pleasant enough, though un-informed.

Good review, sorry to hear about your experience! Maybe you should try free volunteering in more low key places... www.gapyearworldwide.com is a useful start.

Great review, I considered i-to-i when I wanted to do something similar and didn't take it up precisely because none of the money goes to the projects and it's more expensive than other places.

We are sorry that your meaningful travel experience in Peru did not meet your expectations. We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that i-to-i conducts extensive research into all its destinations and projects in an attempt to provide a well structured, efficient support network for our customers. Given the wide range of destinations on offer however, it is not always possible to guarantee that there is a UK team member that has visited the specific one you chose. Furthermore, because of the highly specialised nature of the projects, situations can arise which are beyond our control. When such events occur, we always do our best to help resolve them to the satisfaction of the customer, and are usually able to do so. Sadly this was not the case here. In general the quality of our service is reflected in our extremely low complaint rate and high customer satisfaction, as evidenced in the testimonials on our website. In an attempt to further enhance our customer satisfaction, we have recently begun a new research initiative that will allow us to communicate more effectively with our customers and help improve our service still further. If you have any further comments, please feel free to contact us via our website: www.i-to-i.com. i-to-i
