Restaurants, hotels, houses and hoilday properties are situated (perched on the cliff face) to take advantage of the view of the sunset over the Caldera.
Ia seems an exspensive place to stay for a holiday on Santorini but it is worth while taking a day trip there; it is a very photogenic place to visit. You can get to Ia by taking a local bus from Thira ( Santorinis capital town) which only cost a few euros. If you are staying in one of the resorts like Perissa you will need to take a local bus to Thira and then from there catch the bus to Ia. Please take care at the bus depot as the buses there reverse without warning even when passengers are standing behind them queing for other buses.
You can also visit Ia by boooking a boat trip at your resort which provides coach transport to the port and then a day out which includes a viist to the volcanic island and drops you at the port of Ia in time for the sunset and you then catch a coach back. The coach depot is a bit caotic because of the number of coaches and people making their way there at the sametime for the trip back. It is best just to keep asking until you find the right bus for your trip and destination back to your resort.
There is something about Ia that you may love but I hated and that is the Donkey Steps; if you are dropped by boat at the port the way up to the town is by a stairway of 'cobbled' steps which are better suited for donkeys walking up them than people. Donkeys carry people up the steps and then are run back down the steps by the owners who shout to the tourists who are walking to step to one side and get out of the way. You may find this funny I found it a bit scary having them run past at quite a pace when you are trying to squeeze out of their way; anyone walking up with children needs to keep them close by and do not attempt this walk if you are not fit and well.
Do not be put off visiting this place because it really is unusual and it is worth a visit. The sunset was good but it is worth viisitng it in the day even if you cannot stay for the evening. I visited Ia both for the day and one evening and took some of my best holiday photos.

we went self catering last year at the end of may £101 each last minute best money spent on holiday yet,just as the season was beginning so it was very quite,which was great as perissa beach is where apart from the family holiday makers its a haven for backpackers the place though is fantastic,we drank in the local bars one of which had a pool table and only closed when the last person left,it wasnt busy but the atmosphere was great.
we hired a cheap for 2 days at a very cheap rate off a garage in town loads cheaper than through the rep driving on santorini was spectacular and you drive round the whole island in a few hours but there are lots of places to see.
santorini only gets expensive when you go to a place called IA at the north definately aimed at the us market but the views are magnificent.
