Wanting a cheap sunshine break in the canaries, I wanted to save as much money as I could. I found flights with Iberia from London Heathrow via Madrid which for 2 adults and 1 child was £350 cheaper than companies such as Thomson and thomascook. Done deal. So what was the experience like?
Check-in We were unable to check in online prior to departure. I work in the travel industry and called Iberia to find out what the problem was. I was informed that it might be because we were not flying direct, however he would check and call me back. No call came. We got to terminal 2 about 2.5 hours prior to the flight. The check-in didnt open until 2 hours but we hoped being at the front of the queue would allow us seats together as travelling with a 4 year old. Check-in was painless we were issued our boarding pass through to Las Palmas and advised the luggage would check all the way through. It became apparent at check in that we werent the only people taking this option.
The Flight On board on time. My son was given an Iberia plane jelly lolly, some colouring pencils and a colouring competition. This was nice but all in Spanish and noone explained what to do! Iberia are one of the only scheduled airlines that dont include food / drinks on board their flights. A sandwich plus drink was €10. Had I known this in advance I would have taken my own. I did however get some water free! The staff were pleasant. All announcements done in spanish followed by English.
Punctuality All flights departed on time. No complaints there.
Flight Connections We connected in Madrid. On the outbound flight we had to change terminals. This involved a lengthy walk and then a monorail. Madrid airport is huge! Plenty of facilities though for shopping and eats. I would advise anyone who has walking difficulties or travelling with elderly passengers should arrange assistance. It took us a good 20 minutes of walking to reach the new gate. The return was easier as this was within the same terminal. Having the boarding passes all the way through and no luggage to transfer was definately a bonus.
Luggage All our luggage made the connections as well. Also arriving in Las Palmas we received our luggage a lot quicker than one of the english airlines as we were on the official spanish airline!
Overall I found the Iberia experience fairly painless to be honest. The connections were easy, and to be honest it only added an extra hour to our journey which saves us £350! Would I do it again? Ive already booked to travel with them again in August 09. They offer flights to Gran Canaria for £250. All the charter companies ive checked are over £350.

Advantages: We got from London Heathrow to Madrid and back safely and on time Disadvantages: British Airways codeshare; I'm sure that BA would have been somewhat better!
