On our latest European city visit, we decided to stay at the Ibis Wescorner. It was well located outside the bustling city centre in the Transformatorweg of Amsterdam Sloterdijk. It was walking distance from the main train station, however we walked around for 15 odd minutes before we saw signs giving us the proper directions to the hotel. The directions we printed off the hotel website were not too clear, however we asked a couple people who pointed us in the right direction. There was also a bus stop conveniently located outside which we used to get into Amsterdam Centraal in just under 15 minutes.
The service at the hotel was average for a hotel of that standard, although we were able to purchase bus passes in the lobby for around £10. The staff were professional and courteous and made sure they mentioned that they would look into any request that we had. The room itself was small but clean, with a relatively modernly styled and large bathroom. It must have been our bad luck to get a room with a non-functioning toilet, which was fixed at least 3 times whenever we asked. It also appeared to be a smoking room, which in hindsight we should have questioned when we booked it online for £45 per night, down from the normal £65 to £85. The room also was to the front of the building with a large window, allowing us to see the weather conditions and the traffic situation each morning. The bed was also quite firm and allowed us a proper nights sleep. The facilities included on-demand tv, room service and breakfast, although the choice was more sandwich and cereal based than continental. It was open till late however which gave a greater flexibility to late sleepers.
In the main lobby, there was a conference facility and a bar. We were disappointed however that there was no internet availability which may not go down too well with business travellers, despite the location to many nearby companies. For private visitors however, there was a small room with hundreds of brochures and maps which you could look through at your own pace, rather than hassling the counter staff.
Overall though, our stay was pretty comfortable considering the circumstances and it was very good value for money. After all, the Ibis brand has been pretty reliable in the UK, and in my opinion has been carried through to Amsterdam as well.
