Question
What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain is not an option?
Answer.
Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels the capital of Belgium. I did this in June 2003 and I had a great time.
I flew with Ryanair from John Lennon airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that cost us 35 euros. The airfare was really cheap. Advantages: Good location, not too noisy, good value if on offer Disadvantages: Slow check in
Although I am usually to be heard extolling the virtues of hostels and small private hotels, I have of late found myself increasingly turning to Accor hotels. This is how we managed to pay a, not unreasonable, rate of £63 for a double room at Ibis Euston on a Saturday in late November. The standard rate advertised outside the hotel is £129 so this represents a good saving.
Although we were traveling into and out of Kings Cross we were happy enough to stay at Euston as ...
Advantages: Lots of TV channels, right in the middle of Brussels. Disadvantages: Only that they don't do more than one single bed to each room.
This hotel greatly enhanced the enjoyment of my stay in Brussels over Easter weekend in Brussels. The first thing that hit me when I entered the room, was that there were not three single beds for me and my two brothers, but one single and two doubles. I had encountered the same problem whilst staying in a hotel Ibis in Paris a few weeks ago. After a little discussion with management, it emerged that Ibis does not do more than one single bed in each room. Reluctantly, we agreed to stay, and when we say what television channels they had, our minds were made up. They somehow had BBC 1 and 2, and they also had quite a few good American channels. Amusingly, they also had a few adult channels pay per view or course, and they gave assurance on their guide that no reference would be made for the choice of film (this was topic of a good laugh ...
