...A low budget weekend getaway (thanks to National Express for the £1 each way offer!) called for a low cost hotel. I remembered someone saying that the Accor family member Etap now had a hotel in Sheffield but, situated by the Don Valley Stadium, it was a little too far out of town to be practical for such a short stay. As I am now the proud owner of an Accor hotels loyalty card I decided to check the Accor website and see if any other reasonably priced hotels presented themselves and this was how we came to choose the Ibis. I know this will sound strange to those readers who like a certain “standard” of accommodation but I have rarely considered Ibis hotels because I’ve always thought them to be pricey; in any case I tend to look at hostel and bed and breakfast accommodation before I look at hotel options.

...There was a time when we had to travel by car quite a lot, especially in Italy, Spain and France. ...Question
What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain is not an option?
Answer.
Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels the capital of Belgium. I did this in June 2003 and I had a great time.
I flew with Ryanair from John Lennon airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that cost us 35 euros (luckily we had Duskman who has a degree in French so he was able to negotiate a cheap fare). The airfare was really cheap. It only cost £20 for a return fare including all taxes...

Arrived at the hotel at around 1pm on Friday 19th December. We eventually found the car park even though it was not sign posted at all (little side street to left of the Ibis and right behind the building). Giving the time of year we were relieved to... more
