Ibis Hotel, Bonn

Just had a long holiday floating around Europe, been to over 10 cities, 6 countries in total. On the road, especially for holiday - which is meant for relaxation, the last thing I'd want to do is to worry about where to lodge after a day's out.

A colleague recommended the Ibis Hotel. This is a chain hotel under the Accor group, which consists Ibis, Novetelle, Hotel Mercury and a few more. Ibis are mostly 2 stars. But for me, it's better than 4 star.

Talking about hotels, the first thing I go for is comfort. Ibis Hotel certainly gives me that. Its characteristic is its modernisation. Being a city girl, this makes me feel like home. The rooms are generally not too big, but enough space to be in. Most of the time the beds takes half of the space – fairly big beds, which makes it even more comfy. Apart from the beds, there are a telly (standard, with remote), a table, and an en-suite bathroom with shampoo, soap, cups and towels ready. Nothing to worry about, everyday essentials are all there.

The second thing is of course easy to find. I went on a drive-around journey, with a car and a suitcase, plus a big European map. I found the address of the first Ibis Hotel I was staying at online and then I took their brochure there. The brochure lists all the Ibis Hotels in Europe, along with the number of rooms available (normally standard two beds, with a few 3 beds and 4 beds), price in the own currency of the country and also in euro, address and phone numbers, and directions to find the hotel. Directions are very clear (at least to me!) and I never had any problems – there are always signs on the road near the hotel.

The price is another good thing. You can see the price clearly in the brochure and sometimes there are summer discounts. Normally a standard room of 2 beds is between £30 - £50, depending on the position of the hotel and the popularity of the city you are staying at. The room rates include the breakfast – if you don’t want it, just say so when you check in – the receptionist will take that charge off. If you do want the breakfast however, it’s in the style of French breakfast mainly.

At the beginning I have booked the rooms, however soon after I realised that there was no need – normally there are rooms available, and for people as lazy as me it’s just such a treat – you can just pop along and there you go, never worry about not having a room. However if you do want to book (just to make sure), the room is reserved to you until 10pm.

All the hotels have car parks, most of them free of charge when you lodge there, although some (mostly the ones in the city centre) cost a little bit of money (the one in Bonn charged £2 for a night).

And of course, for people like me who stayed with them over the whole holiday, there are special promotions. That’s the Ibis Card. For £72 a year you can have a 10% discount whenever you stay with Ibis (or any of the Accor group) and every 10 night you get a free bed & breakfast for a standard of 2 people. Is it a deal or is it a deal???

Being always too tired of a whole’s shopping outside or touring, I didn’t actually have the energy of exploring the hotel fully. However I was very impressed by the facilities, and the attitudes of the staff there. I felt very warm and ease as home and I can always manage to find an Ibis Hotel after a day’s exploring of my destination. Feels right like a mobile home on the road.
