We booked a double room for a few days in Ibis Portsmouth from their website, which is a standard operation that can be compared to a typical online purchase.
We checked in late on a week night and staff was friendly. The lobby and bar restaurant are really nicely decorated. The atmosphere is really pleasant and relaxing. They have two large aquariums with really nice fishes with beautiful ornaments. Everything is nicely light.
The room was tidy and clean. There was a large and confortable double bed, a table with the usual tea, coffee and biscuits, a TV, and a well light large mirror. The room included an en-suite bathroom with shower, sink and toilet, which was also in a clean state. Some gel/shampoo is available in the shower. The usual soap and glass by the sink. Nice white towels are obviously provided, and there is an interesting sticker on the mirror which promotes an ecological service regarding laundry: if you don't need your towel to be changed keep it hanged. We had a great night sleep and we appreciated the size of the bed and the confort of the mattress. The only minus would be the size of the bathroom.
The bar is really nice and has a great peaceful atmosphere, which can get lively if the bar is busy. This apparently happens during the weekends as there is a busy night life in a street not far from the hotel. Some cutomers can get loud when drunk but the hotel has efficient security. Staff is really friendly at the bar and restaurant. There is a nice menu at affordable prices, and it has a nice 'French touch'. Items on the snack menu are available on a 24h basis. Breakfast is a cold buffet with fruits, ham, turkeyham, cheese, butter, yoghurt, different types of bread, different types of cereal, bagels. Toasters are available. Obviously some juices, milk and hot beverages are included. There is also a selection of jams/jellies and honey. All this for a very fair price. We really enjoyed it. We also appreciated the confortable chairs and the privacy. It is a really pleasant and clean hotel restaurant.
The hotel is located in the centre of Portsmouth. It is at walking distance from the University facilities, a pub street, and a large shopping area. At a 15 mins walk you can enjoy Gunwharf Quays, where there are bars, restaurants, discos, and a lot of outlet shops. There is Spinaker Tower which is one of the landmarks of Portsmouth, and the view of the sea is really enjoyable. The sea front is at about the same walking distance. There are also quite a few museums and exhibitions to see.
The check out was quick and easy, and staff was again friendly.
To sum up: Good points - staff was friendly - large and confortable bed - snack available 24h - Really nice and pleasant lobby, bar and restaurant - cleanliness - great location
Minuses - small bathroom - loud guests during the weekend - a bit pricy for an Ibis hotel
