Strasbourg Cathedral

Advantages: Beautiful Gothic cathedral set in a delightful setting.
Disadvantages: Gets crowded when the clock is performing. Pickpockets.

Strasbourg Cathedral. Where is Strasbourg? Strasbourg is in the North East region of France in Alsace which is on the border with Germany. It has a chequered history in that it has been at different times throughout history either in Germany or in France. It is currently of course in France. The region has its own dialect of French known as Alsacien with a combination of French and German words. Getting to Strasbourg can be an absolute nightmare from the UK involving changes of planes either at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris or Frankfurt am Mein in Germany. Ryan air fly to Baden Baden- Karlsruhe not too far away in Germany after Air France objected to them flying into Strasbourg. Air France no longer offers direct flights from the UK. By Road: Strasbourg is at the end of the very useful motorway system in ...

Strasbourg, Europe

Advantages: pretty historical centre
Disadvantages: couldn't find any in one day

When a colleague asked me if I´d accompany her and a form of 31 15/16-year-old pupils on a 2½ day excursion to Strasbourg I agreed, I knew most of the boys and girls and expected they wouldn´t be too stressful and I´d been to Strasbourg so many years ago that I felt my memory could do with some brushing up. Strasbourg is only 2½ hours by direct train from the town where we live, we got on the train in Germany and got off in France, just like that, no customs people, no border police with dogs checking the train, no changing of money. This is what a united Europe means for us! To imagine that not too long ago young people were taught to see the French as archenemies; if we mentioned that today, they´d look at us as if we were talking about the Middle Ages, yes, we have made progress. The first impression was so-so, we came out ...

Ibis Sheffield - the heat is on, no it's off again!

Advantages: Good location, good value for money
Disadvantages: No additional facilties

A low budget weekend getaway (thanks to National Express for the £1 each way offer!) called for a low cost hotel. I remembered someone saying that the Accor family member Etap now had a hotel in Sheffield but, situated by the Don Valley Stadium, it was a little too far out of town to be practical for such a short stay. As I am now the proud owner of an Accor hotels loyalty card I decided to check the Accor website and see if any other reasonably priced hotels presented themselves and this was how we came to choose the Ibis. I know this will sound strange to those readers who like a certain ?standard? of accommodation but I have rarely considered Ibis hotels because I?ve always thought them to be pricey; in any case I tend to look at hostel and bed and breakfast accommodation before I look at hotel options. We were quoted £49 ...
