You'll get a smiling reception at any time of day or night.Fans of the giant 'All you can eat' buffet have to be on hand between 06:30 and 10:00 h. In the weekend you can even enjoy the complete breakfast buffet up to midday, and check out until 15:00 h. But for the early risers (04:00 to 06:30 h.) and the late risers (10:00 to 12:00 h.) there's always a croissant and cup of tea or coffee. ...Tilburg received its city rights by Napoleon’s brother, when it was a mere street or two, unpaved, a few farms… Now, Tilburg is a blooming city with a few shopping centres, a variety of hotels and motels, and a city centre where the highstreets provides you with a diversity of shops. Public transport is extremely well organised, and a lot of the buildings, -including the modest palace built and designed by King William of Orange the second- have remained intact and are combined with more modern housing and stores. It doesn’t take too long to get to the countryside, to visit the Trappisten monastery, which provides guided tours, or just to ride a bicycle around the countryside. Good for a week or weekend away, Tilburg is a calm place compared to Amsterdam and other cities of that size....

...To set things in context before I even start to describe my experience at the Ibis in Reading, I think it's only fair to confess that I hate Ibis hotels. With a passion! I really did wonder what I'd done to offend our secretary and get booked in this one. I'm sure I didn't forget her birthday, raid the stationery cupboard or commit any other serious secretary-annoying offences. If there's one thing guaranteed to put a damper on my day it's that little four-letter word on a hotel booking confirmation. In my hotel-dictionary, the definition next to the word Ibis says 'nasty penny pinching crappy hotel'.

My first challenge was finding the hotel. When I saw it was near the railway station I was suspicious that parking might be a problem so I rang ahead to check whether they had a car park and, as feared, the answer was no...
