Golden Falls on a White River
Advantages: Amazing natural beauty and power. Disadvantages: Very icy paths in winter.
...often referred to as the Golden Circle. Many organised excursions complete the circle daily. You can of course, do as we did and hire a car. The route is well signposted and Gullfoss easy to find.
A large car park is situated just off the main road. Until this point, the falls are not visible. But as you get out of your car or climb down from the coach, the mighty falls capture you in all their thunderous glory. Gullfoss is actually two separate ... ...fee to the falls. However getting to the falls is another matter. If travelling by care there is petrol (which is costly) and a hair-raising journey along some pot-holed gravel roads. There are several tours, a Golden Circle excursion at the time of writing costs 7000 Icelandic Krona per person. ...

One of the best natural wonders in Europe
Advantages: easy to get to, beautiful Disadvantages: dangerous for younger children
...the true feature is the Great Geysir itself. At first it seems rather inconspicuous, just another bubbling geothermal pool, but approximately every 2 minutes it starts to swell and then explodes into a 20 metre fountain of water, a truely astonishing sight. The Geysir is also qute easy to access with good roads nearby and there is little walking to do in order to reach the Geysir itself. I would say that this site is a must for anyone visiting Iceland. ...

All Churned Up
Advantages: A spectactular natural phenomenum not often seen. Disadvantages: Smell of Sulphur! Icy pathways!
Strokkur translated into English is Churner. It isn't the largest geyser in Iceland, the credit for that lies with the nearby Geysir (meaning gusher), but it is incredibly impressive reaching upto 20 metres in height and is a great deal more relaible spouting every eight minutes or so.
Strokkur and Geysir erupt from the geyser fields in the geothermal Haukadalur valley of Southern Iceland. A massive cauldron of bubbling spurting mud, water and steam, ... ...tourist to the country. The two largest of the geysers, Strokkur and Geysir have been included in every Iclandic travel guides published from the 18th century to the present day. It was the Great Geysir that gave the name to all geysers all over the world. Records tell of how Geysir once reached a staggering 70 metres. Today it merely gurgles! For years Icelanders added soap powder to the pool (a kind of Viagra for geysers) to stimulate eruption. ...

Impressive but not a touch a Niagra
Advantages: relatively easy to get to Disadvantages: can be very cold, dangerous
I visited the falls in the February of 2006 and i must say i was only mildly impressed. The walk round to the falls was quite enchanting due to the ice covered paths and railings and it really felt as though you were going into another world. However from the main view point the Falls were still some way in the distance and alhtough they were clearly visible i would have prefered to go closer and experience the true power. This is possible as a small ... ...the path is very small and in conjunction with the ice is not advisable to pursue said route. On the other hand the Falls were well worth their visit and the two stage drop was quite impressive. i think the reason why i might have not been so impressed by Gullfoss is because i have already visited both Angel and Niagra Falls and in comparison Gullfoss is no where near as good. If you really want to get close to a an amazing waterfall in Iceland i ...
