Reviews of Iceland Experience »
Go on...be a creature!
Advantages: Very Relaxing Disadvantages: A little expensive, but completely worth it.
The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a definite must you need to experience whilst in Iceland. Iceland is actually located on the boundaries of two large tectonic plates, these being the Eurasian plate and the North American plate. Iceland is very volcanic and there are many geysers and hot springs throughout the country. The Mid Atlantic Ridge actually runs from the East coast of Iceland through Reykajik to the centre of Iceland. The reason I am telling ... ...the destination and appreciate that although Iceland has many natural heated waters nothing can quite prepare you for the Blue Lagoon. Location / Getting There
---------------------------------
The Blue Lagoon is based in the middle of nowhere, nearer to Keflavik airport than anywhere else in Iceland. It is about a 40-45 minute drive from Reykjavik via road. The only way to the Lagoon is via road the best way to get there is to go to the BSI bus ...

Iceland an unforgettable place
Advantages: Breathtaking Scenery, Blue Lagoon, Husky sleighs, Northarn Lights Disadvantages: Cold, not much daylight, expensive!
Well of all the places in the world to go you would think, why would one pick a cold, dark expensive place! Here is why!
Iceland great! but very cold!!! When we got to Reykjavik, we couldn't believe how small it was.... Literally 1 street (with a few side streets) about a mile long was the capital city! It consisted of a few very expensive restaurants. 2 supermarkets, 1 off license that shuts at 6pm! Expensive shops and that was it really! The daylight ... ...Here are a couple of things we done:
1. Went on a tour to see some geezers, which is hot water or lava under the earth that basically has an opening to the surface and every so often it shoots in the air. Great site, cold place.
2. Saw some frozen water falls which was pretty amazing and I know not to state the obvious but I have never seen so much snow or ice in my life.... that might be why its called Iceland!
3. In the evenings we went out ...

more great sights in Iceland
Advantages: two increadible sights to behold Disadvantages: a lot of travelling, not a lot to do other than look at hem
Continuing on my trip around iceland and yet more amazing sites to be seen, and this was only the second day, the first day having been to the blue lagoon (read my other review). Geysir is one of the other big tourist attractions of Iceland although its only a shoirt visit, once you've seen it go off once or twice theres not a lot else to do.
However as a geographer and geologist i found it fascinating. Now for a few boring facts. The geyser which ... ...actually called strikkur, it fires a stream of hot water 50-100ft into the air every 7 minutes which lis quite a sight to behold. The great Geysir, from which all geysers around the world get their names rarely erupts anymore becasue in the 70s and 80s people used to put soap into it which apparantly triggers it to erupt, sadly this has now caused it to stop erupting at all, so now we never get to see the 250ft jet of water.
Well worth a visit because ...

An exploded mountain
Advantages: You can sit outside in natural bathwater in ICELAND! Come on! Disadvantages: Hard to reach, travel is expense on bus or by jeep
Askja is a place where you abruptly sense the immense forces that have shaped Iceland throughout time. The black a field at the bottom of Askja and the sharp peaks towering all around, give this unique place a feel of mystery that will leave no-one untouched.
Askja is a giant caldera (Spanish for cauldron) in the mountain range of Dyngjufjoll. Dyngjufjoll lies to the north of Vatnajokull - the third largest glacier behind the Arctic and Greenland. ... ...S-E-corner of Askja lies Lake Oskjuvatn, 11 km2 and 217 m deep, which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. The lake, formed by a giant eruption in 1875, is well fenced off by sheer cliff walls and can only be reached from the eastern side.
Scientists believe that Askja may have been the biggest mountain in Iceland before it literally exploded and was transformed into a caldera. Thus it is an extremely rare phenomenon and has been the subject of ...

Blue Heaven
Advantages: Relaxing, Refreshing. A unique experience. Disadvantages: Incomplete information leaflets.
Swimming in the hot almost-fluorescent aquamarine waters of the Blue Lagoon surrounded by black basalt lava rocks in icy temperatures of minus six degrees pelted with sporadic bursts of freezing rain is a unique experience and one I will remember for some time.
The Blue Lagoon is a pool of geothermal sea water created by an unexpected consequence to the massive Svartsengi power plant. The power plant was built in the late 70s, and together with ... ...of the country's electricity as well as around 87% of the country's hot water requirements. The power plant uses geothermally heated sea water from as deep as 2000 meters / 6000 feet below ground to transfer heat to fresh water for consumer use. The surplus brine waters are allowed to pour over onto the surrounding lava fields where they were originally intended to drain away back through the lava. Instead the lagoon filled with this incredible milky-blue ...
