On a recent trip to Baltimore, I chose to fly Icelandair for several reasons. I'd been recommended their flights by my boss who has made the trip on several occasions, and when I enquired about fares, this one was the cheapest. Not being one to quibble with price, I settled on Icelandair.
My flight was a two-leg affair (oo-er?), firstly Glasgow to Keflavik, Iceland, and then Keflavik to Baltimore/Washington International and I'd chosen a return flight.
On checking in at Glasgow, I had a slightly strange request for the staff. I'd fallen (while sober, I should note - not drunk, just stupid….) a few days previously and had a cracker of a gash and bruise across my right shin. I'd thought about this before hand and therefore requested an aisle seat on the left hand side of the plane, so if the leg room was negligible, I could shove my leg out into the aisle to disrupt the hostesses at every given opportunity. The staff never even flinched. I was given my boarding pass and off I limped in the general direction of the duty free!
When boarding was called at Glasgow, there seemed to be a little confusion as to which seats were announced, but the representatives ensured that the passengers knew what was happening. I boarded nervously, not sure of what to expect in the way of leg-room.
Icelandair planes are generally 737's. Not huge, but well-equipped. Thankfully, the leg room was enough for my 33 inch pins that I wasn't scrunched up throughout the flight. The seats were reasonably comfortable within the boundaries of economy class, although a quick peek through the Magic Curtain to first class confirmed that their leg room was the same as mine. Nyah nyah x 1000!
The in-flight service was good, although a little different to other airlines I have encountered. Instead of bringing around the drinks, then food, then drinks again, these guys had clearly thought it through. Drinks that would be taken with the meal were served at the same time as the first 'round' of drinks. This was good for the hostesses but not ideal for the passengers. It meant sitting with two drinks until the food was served. I'm not the best at balancing (see above) and so I'm constantly afraid of spillages (no-one wants to be wearing a lovely beaujolais for six hours or more!). Thankfully, the only spillages came in the form of the hostess accidentally spraying me with water on the return flight, but I quickly dried out and they were very helpful.
The food was nothing spectacular, but what airline food is? A small salad with typically a chicken or omlette 'main'. If you're anything like me on these flights, you'd eat the carpet you're so hungry. I never quite get around to being organised enough to take anything with me to shove into my fat gob!
This may be a criticism or compliment (make up your own mind), but the hostesses (no male stewards) were less "dolly" than those on other airlines I've encountered, less frills and bitchiness (if you know what I mean). They were bilingual, with both Icelandic and English although I never noticed any other languages being spoken.
I'd fly Icelandair again, without a doubt. All flights I took ran on time and although they are a small operator, they fly to several destinations in the USA and Europe. It's worth bearing in mind that almost all flights will be via Keflavik, so if you're the Sultan of Brunei or are just worth a bob or two, you could try to spend a few days in Reykjavik.
PS If you're like me and haven't a clue where Keflavik is, it's to the South-west of Reykjavik, Iceland. If you do end up flying to Keflavik, do try and get a window seat if it's going to be a clear day. You'll get a view of some of Iceland and it's certainly worth seeing for the black volcanic land (not unlike the top of the Cairngorms!)
I've just returned from a trip to Iceland and flew icelandair there and back. Maureen x

I loved the Op on Icelandair...I have to admit to eating the carpet on a previous flight...but that was more about needing some fibre in my diet !!!!...a great Op and one that has at least convinced me to consider Icelandair in the future ...Thanks and well done on the PhD...I have shelved mine for the time being....may regroup next year for the final year !! ...Andrew
