Advantages: Ideally located for Bar, Tavernas And Exploring The Old Town Disadvantages: Alongside The main Road to The Port
The Hotel Ideon is located overlooking the Cretan Sea and surrounded by the old Turkish/Venetian town, with its monuments, Fortress and its Venetian Port all within a few minutes walk. It is also within easy reach of the commercial and cosmopolitan centre of the town, including its excellent, long sandy beach.
There are approximately 80 rooms in the main building each equipped with shower, balcony, a/c, heating, safe deposit box, TV, ... ...apartments attached to the hotel.
The bathrooms are a bit on the small side, room for one at a time only, but I have found this to be the norm throughout Greece. Also, again as is to be expected in Greece, there can be a shortage of hot water a peak times; this was too much of a problem given the hot weather we experienced.

We were fortunate to have a sea view on both our visits and I would definitely advise paying the extra for one of the room. The only drawbacks to the rooms on the from is they overlook the busy port road which, twice a day, is full of lorries taking good to and from the Athens ferry. The noise is easily shut out if you close the balcony doors. Also, there are several bars that along the road that get very lively, on a weekend, with mainly young Greek people enjoying themselves. Again you can shut the noise out, or have a glass of ouzo on the balcony and just enjoy people having fun.
The hotel has a very friendly reception service, a restaurant buffet with a rich variety of Greek/international specialties for breakfast and dinner, although I never tried the dinners I can definitely recommend the breakfast, although be care of the boiled eggs; they tend to be underdone. There is a cosy cocktail bar in a spacious lounge with quiet corners completes or outside seating. The barman Manolis is particularly efficient and very sociable; although he perhaps has an unhealthy interest in everyone's sex life (I think it's a Greek thing!) and I swear the "one for the road" glass of ouzo got bigger each night.
The outdoor pool and associated sun-loungers are spotlessly clean. The pool isn't big but it is large enough for a refreshing swim.
Although I myself do not have children I thought the hotel itself was extremely family friendly.
Within two minutes of leaving the hotel you are in the heart of Rethmnon old town, with its myriad of Tavernas. My advice is explore the smaller side streets before opting for any of the restaurants on the main road., there are some excellent small family run tavernas, basic but with excellent quality food.
Rethymnon's long sandy beach, with its associated bars and tavernas across the road, was perhaps a 5 to 10 minute stroll away. Although not really a beach person I can recommend the bars for having this area for having a drink and watching the world go by in the evening.
In conclusion the hotel is very well maintained throughout, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the location of the hotel is second to none and it is one of my all time favourite hotels. If you want an ideal base for your trip to Rethymnon then this hotel is for you.
