Sensory overload in Venice

Advantages: Great food writing, delicious recipes, interesting factual stuff
Disadvantages: Not enough recipes; overly flowery descriptions; unappealing characters

There are some books that just refuse to be pigeon-holed, assuming that one need do that at all. Not only is Marlena de Blasi's debut a book that is difficult to label but it is one that confounds and and yet enchants with each turn of the page. I raced through the book relishing every word, but found myself seething with indignation at bad writing and annoyed with a narrator who just made me want to scream. "A Thousand Days in Venice: an unexpected romance" is usually stacked on bookshops with travel writing and indeed, it does fit into that genre. But it is travel writing that focuses primarily on the domestic. It is undoubtedly a memoir, but a memoir that is forever pointing the reader forwards, wondering what may be. The cover notes say that the book "Includes recipes" but in reality there are few. In her subtitle de Blasi refers ...

Review of A Thousand Days in Venice - Marlena di Blasi

A SHAKESPEAREAN TRAGEDY

Advantages: A chance to relive history...ahem
Disadvantages: Rubbish

-themed tat. We didn't buy anything. The house itself is a museum dedicated to the combined works of Shakespeare...I'm kidding, it's all about Jules. Entrance is a very reasonable 4 euros so finance was not an obstacle, although good taste should have been. Conveniently, there's another gift shop inside the house. We didn't buy anything. There's not an awful lot to see in the house itself - some period furniture (not from Romeo and Juliet's period I would hazard a guess) and Juliet's real-life, actual bed...except it's not. Well it wouldn't be would it? The house actually dates from the 12th century but it was renovated by the city in the 1930s at which time the balcony was added. I suppose this balcony was a replacement for the original where Juliet did her thing...perhaps not. It's possible to wander out onto the balcony where you can have ...

Review of Juliet's House (Casa di Giulietta), Verona

It's all a big, big con!

Advantages: hmmm....gift shop?
Disadvantages: that would be 734 word's worth - see review!

Yes, I am back and finally writing reviews, my recent holiday to Italy has inspired me - after a bit of a break, I thought, ease myself in with a nice easy review - The House of Juliet or Casa di Giulietta. ~Finding Juliet's House~ As most of you know it is "fair Verona where we lay our scene", tucked between two shops on Via Capello, just off of Piazza delle Erbe, heading towards Porta Leoni. To be honest, it is not hard to find - just look for the mass of tourists gathering outside the gates. ~What's there?~ To be honest - not much, Snarf & I weren't actually particularly bothered about visiting Juliet's house, but we had us a Verona Card (a card that costs 8 euros, entitling you to "free" entry into all Verona's museums, churches, monuments & free travel on local AMT buses for that day, a card valid for 3 days is available ...
