Until this time, Italy had been a series of fragmented states, governed or ruled by various foreign powers, including the Spanish Bourbon family and the Austrian Metternich empire. Piedmont in the north was the only one to not be ruled by a foreign presence, but for a long while suffered due to despotic and reactionary leaders. Vittorio Emmanuell however, along with Cavour who was the Prime Minister of Piedmont, ruled during a time of change which included the want for independence. Advantages: Beautiful, historic, lots of things to see Disadvantages: Tiring!
If you are looking for a great sigtseeing weekend away in Europe with plenty of history and amazing, steeped in tradition things to see then Rome is the city for you. I was taken there two years ago by my husband and absolutely loved it. Definitely one of the best sites to see is the Colosseum for the sheer wonder of it. I would suggest you spare most of the day to see it as there is a lot to do. Firstly get there early as there are thousands and thousands of visitors every time. The queue to get tickets was unbelieveable so we joined a group by paying 10 Euros more I think and that got us in a lot quicker. it's better to do this than show yourself around. The price then also included an audio pack that you could listen to as you went around the Colosseum. As soon as we got in we ditched our tour guide and looked around the palce ourself ...

The immensity of these historical remains took my breath away before I had even begun to learn about the depth and horror of its history. Those of you who have seen Gladiator or studied Ancient Rome in history lessons may be aware of the basic features and uses of the Colosseum in its days of glory but the amount of information given during the tour intrigued and enlightened me to the full extent of its history.
Getting to the Colosseum could not be easier. It is situated in the centre of Rome quite literally with main roads running meters away from its ancient structure. The Metro station is situated within meters of the entrance with a zebra crossing leading across the road to the cobbled pathway that ran around the Colosseum.
