Advantages: great base for serious trekking Disadvantages: not much else to do
...After the laid-back, nature-oriented, happy town of Pai, MaeHongSon was a real shock. We thought that a town on the Myanmar border would be even more wild and remote, but this turned out to be a wrong assumption. It seems that close proximity to the opium barons is lucrative.
MaeHongSon is full of stores carrying modern supplies and restaurants serving farang (foreign) food. There is a steady stream of moped traffic and even the occasional 4x4, so keep that in mind if you are thinking of eating roadside. The scenery is beautiful, but the town is not one with nature like Pai. Rather it is very much a giant suburb surrounded by jungle.
The jungle and the steep mountains are very appealing. If you decide to trek from here, be ready for a rugged, difficult climb on most of the days you are out. The climbs are hands...

Advantages: Views, rooftop pool, nice rooms, free broadband Disadvantages: Little walk to the nightlife and shopping
...I stayed here with my partner at the end of May 2006 for three nights at a cost of £50 per night for a standard room. We were starting our gap year travels here, and had done plenty of research to find a reasonably priced hotel, due to the high cost of living in Hong Kong.
We got the airport express into Hong Kong and then got a taxi to the hotel, which took fifteen minutes.
Located in Causeway Bay, on average it took us twenty minutes to walk into the city centre, where the shopping and restaurants generally were, but this was not a problem for us. There were always taxis outside if you wanted to gete there quicker, but we wanted to see more of the city.
Upon arrival our bags were taken out of the taxi for us by hotel staff and taken up the escalator to the reception. Heree we checked in and we were giveen our keys...

Advantages: Great transportation links Disadvantages: none
...When trying to decide on a hotel for our trip to Hong Kong we did a lot of research and opted for the Metro Park Hotel in Causeway bay rather than its sister hotel in Kowloon. This was mainly due to its location in a quieter part of town and its superb transport links. The hotel is roughly three quarters of an hour from the airport and the bus to the airport stops at the door of the hotel, as our transport was included we did not use that option. It is well located too with the MTR station being just along the road, the trams passing the end of the road and the bus to Stanley also just a short walk away. The hotel also runs free transport to Causeway Bay shopping area and also Wan Chai for the conference centre and star ferry.
The hotel has car parking on the ground floor and you enter the reception on the first floor by lift...

One of the most annoying things about the fact that my parents left Hong Kong is that now I have nowhere to stay for free when I pop up there. Of course, there are always friends to stay with, but considering that the average HK flat is the size of an... more
