Pooh meets India's Thomas the Tank Engine
Review of Kalka-Shimla Railway, India by koshkha

Advantages: It's fun, it's cheap and you get cups of free tea
Disadvantages: It's cramped, uncomfortable and can get a bit boring

Background *********** In the days when the British ruled India there were many problems for an expatriated Brit to contend with but one of the most serious was the heat. The average chap sent out to make his fortune or defend his nation's economic and political interests wasn't bred to deal with saturation humidity and thermometer-bursting temperatures. To cope with these extremes, each summer the government, civil service and everyone with the ...
...and literally 'head for the hills'. Many so-called 'hill stations' provided respite from the summer heat but Shimla (or Simla) and in 1864 the city became the official Summer Capital of the British and took on the mantle of the 'Queen of the Hill Stations'. Located up at around 7000 feet in altitude, Shimla offered cool temperatures even in the midst of the summer. It was also a pretty good place to send the ladies (imagine 50 degrees C in corsets ... How I got mugged by a monkey on a mountain
Review of Jakhoo Temple, Shimla, India by koshkha

Advantages: Great views, interesting cultural experience
Disadvantages: Aggressive monkeys

...decision to go to the Jakhoo Temple in Shimla on the day we arrived was pretty dumb. The temple sits on top of Jakhoo Hill at an altitude of almost 2500m, a good 300m higher than most of the city of Shimla which is already at 'nose-bleed' height. We had arrived that morning, settled into the hotel and been out for a substantial lunch and a good wander, when we came across the tourist office at Scandal Point. Tourist Offices in India can be quite ...
...Why there's a temple on Jakhoo Hill Legend tells that Hanuman, the monkey god and a good friend of Lord Rama, stopped to rest on the Jakhoo Hill during his journey from the Himalayas where he'd gone to collect the magic herbs to save Rama's brother Lakshman. As a geologist by training, I'd have to look for a story based around plate tectonics and orogeny (don't worry sounds rude but it just means mountain building) but it's a long time since ... feel easy to fly
Review of Hyderabad, Rajiv Gandhi Airport, India (HYD) by megastar777

Advantages: very advantageous for indian people , looks beautiful, cute maintainance
Disadvantages: away from city, less transport facilities from city to airport.

i once went to rajiv gandhi airport when my brother was going to south dakota state by linking flights from hyderabad. He was going to mumbai from this airport and there from mumbai linking flighta were available . So at that time when i saw that airport i was wondered to see such an airport in india .I feeled as if it was foreign country. That airport consists sush a sophisticated equippment in all regards. The maintainance of the airport was very ...
...like mumbai, chennai, new delhi were kept at an average rate and potential users can usually use this facility . Here all the communication facilities are available but of somewhat away from the hyderabad city. if the transport facilities are provided sufficient enough for this airport this airport would be able to withstand with even international airports. ... CCU Has Improved But Still Has Some Way To Go
Review of Calcutta Airport (CCU) by anonymili

Advantages: fairly polite staff who all speak and understand English
Disadvantages: overly laid back staff, no cash point machines

Calcutta (now called Kolkata) Airport is also known as CCU (airline short code) and NSCBI (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International) and also Dum Dum (pronounced Dom Dom and not dumb dumb as you just imagined) Airport. There are two main parts of the airport - Domestic and International and as I've only ever flown in or out via International I'll stick to discussing my experiences of the International side. I've flown in and out of Kolkata 3 years ...
...At least the staff at Calcutta Airport known how to smile (when prompted) which is more than I can say for the scary and overly intense staff at Muscat's Seeb Airport, but then again, that's possibly a story to be told in another review… The contact details for Calcutta Airport: Airport Director AAI (IAD) NSCBI Airport Kolkata - 700052 India Tel: 00 91-33-5119977 Fax: 00 91- 33-5119266 Email: airport@giasc101.vsnl.net.in Thanks for reading. ... Looking Down my Nose at One-fifth of Humanity
Review of The Viceregal Lodge, Shimla by koshkha

Advantages: Spectacular building of immense historical significance
Disadvantages: Quite honestly, it's pug-ugly

...tell you that one of the top attractions in the Himalayan city of Shimla is the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, a place so rarefied that it takes only a few dozen students, all of them doing post-doctoral studies into esoteric topics that few of us would understand, then you'd probably think: A - I was wrong B - I was lying C - Shimla must be a pretty dull place. To be fair, I'm being a bit dismissive - the IIAS takes only students who are ...
...years ago that makes it the major draw that it is. Today's dull and fusty academic institute was once the place from which one fifth of humanity was ruled for 7 months of the year. The IIAS occupies a building that was built as the summer residence of the Viceroy of India. It was, in short, the Viceregal Lodge. What's a Viceroy? ********************* After the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, the rule of the East India Company came to an end and direct ... Read review
