What a way to run a railway

Advantages: The comfort and excitement of long distance rail
Disadvantages: Expensive; no customer focus; communication by rumour

...the company that operates the Indian Pacific, insists. They say 45 min before the scheduled time of departure; to be on the safe side we made it an hour. I have noted elsewhere my belief that by insisting on this kind of rigmarole railway companies are throwing away such competitive advantage as they enjoy over airlines. Without it, we could have arrived with much less waiting time ahead of us. Also, since we had booked our own compartment, our taking ...
...- each ornamented with the Indian Pacific's emblem of a soaring eagle - occupying the tracks on both sides of a double platform, to be joined on departure. Only the two locos, massive but crusted with dust and rust, let its appearance down.

No passengers were being allowed on board, though cleaning staff did seem to be busy within. There was indeed an information stand on the platform, with no one manning it. We fell into conversation ... more

Clickety Clack - there's a man on the track!

Advantages: see lots of Outback, different to norm, great places to stop off at
Disadvantages: expensive, cramped, basic

...to Sydney via the historic Indian Pacific railway. One point to note here is that the train goes from East Perth Terminal and not Perth Train Station as we had been advised. However, our taxi driver knew the correct one and got us there in good time. ***History*** So called named because it links the two great oceans from the West to the East coast of Australia via the vast openness of the centre. The trip is 4352 kms and takes 65 hours and runs ...
...Only since 1982 has The Indian Pacific been able to run and also go via Adelaide. Prior to that time there were numerous railway companies involved, operating different guage tracks and so passengers had to regularly change trains to continue their journeys. Today it is difficult to see how the operation actually makes any money given it is far cheaper (and quicker) to fly and appears to be more of a tourist thing rather than anything the majority ...

Trailfinders - the best!

Advantages: Complete confidence in Trailfinders knowledge
Disadvantages: Hotels can be limited, but ask for alternatives.

while we waited. All the flights, the Indian Pacific Railway and all the hotels were excellent, and just as decribed in the brochure. We were kept informed of any changes to our itinerary as and when they occurred and each time, we were given a full revised print out. When the political situation arose in Fiji late last year, we were advised to wait and see, not to panic and cancel, and they were proved right, Fiji was lovely. Their online "View Trail" facility is also very convenient as it shows not only a full itinerary, but you can access all the details of your flights - departure and arrival times, flight durations, and airport terminal numbers. All this was very useful for crossing time zones and changing planes as we had a number of flights both domestic and international. We met quite a few other Trailfinders travellers along ...

Gee - that's a lucky shag!!

Advantages: plenty to do, relaxed, vibrant, great year round climate & friendly people.
Disadvantages: very remote

***Background*** I promised to write up our year travelling in my recent review on Manly, Australia and as part of the trip we wanted to do a visit to Perth as we had gotten some free internal Qantas flights in Oz as part of our round the world ticket and thought we may as well fly as far from Sydney as we could given it was free so off we jetted to Perth. Prior to going we booked a hotel on line (web site we used no longer seems active but you can just google the hotel name for plenty of links) and stayed at the Park Royal, Perth for 5 nights but this little trip was simply an excuse to travel back to Sydney in a very unique way ? via The Indian Pacific Railway (more on that in a later review). It was sad to say that I went to Perth not wanting or expecting much and was using it more of a stopover for the trip back. Even if I had ...

Review of Perth (Australia)

A city in the sunshine, remote and empty, Perth, W.A.

Advantages: Wonderful climate, no crowds, clean, very pretty
Disadvantages: Not very historically interesting

and today?s Indian Pacific train still follows this same route from Perth to Sydney via Kalgoorlie and Adelaide. =How you can get there= Perth airport is the main international airport and is a small but efficient, clean and modern airport (puts Heathrow to shame ? has anyone else noticed how grimy everywhere is in Heathrow as you arrive?). If you going to Perth and want details of transfer costs and so on then here is the link for the Airport: http://www.perthairport.net.au/ The Indian Pacific train runs from Sydney and Adelaide I think about twice a week but it takes four days, three nights to cover the 4352 kilometres and is not cheap so you have to want this journey as an experience rather than just a means of getting to or from Perth. If you would like to find out more about this iconic train journey then this is the link to the homepage ...
