More than just the 500!

Advantages: More than meets the eye
Disadvantages: Often overlooked

...people tend to think of Indianapolis in relation to the sporting events that take place here (the Indianapolis 500, Pacers, Colts, an increasing number of others), and tend to overlook some very interesting and historical parts of the city right in the centre. Here are a few of the more interesting spots in Indianapolis that tend to be neglected.

One such overlooked place is Christ Church Cathedral, on the ...
...architectural style.

Indianapolis itself was first settled as a town in 1821; shortly thereafter churches began to be built. The first Christ Church Episcopal building was erected as a small wooden church in 1838; this was demolished and the present building begun in 1857. It was designated Cathedral for the diocese in 1954, and in 1973 was added to the National Register of Historic Sites.

If you are passing it is well worth popping in

Advantages: We had an unexpected and fun day
Disadvantages: Took us even longer to get to Nashville

...supposed to be only passing Indianapolis on our travels between Chicago and Nashville, but due to traffic jams and the need for sleep and a beer or two we decided to stop just outside Indianapolis in one of the many a road side Motels. Now none of us were really great motor racing fans but the gentleman told us you can not visit Indianapolis without going to the circuit. At the time we were not too sure but after a few beers decided we would pop ...
...we did. When we actually found the way into the circuit (it felt like we did a couple of laps looking for the entrance) we paid our three dollar's museum entry and the extra three dollars for a trip round the circuit. After I look round the museum so we could learn a little about the sport, we went on the trip round the track. It was basically a slow drive round the track with a taped commentary about the history of the track, some of which we had ...

Banked corners... in F1?!!!?

Advantages: Perhaps make for an exciting race
Disadvantages: Boring - what does a bank-curve do?

Well, I think personally, bringing F1 to a semi-oval track with an infield section is a poor attempt by the FIA to bring back overtaking to F1. They have seen the wonderful overtaking manoeuvres and considered that bringing F1 to such a circuit might have the same effect. Pheonix wasn't too bad a circuit but I think Indianapolis was a bad choice. Malasya is the only new circuit that I am impressed with. Sorry, but Max Mosley and his posy have made a big mistake here. I may be wrong but I do not think it will bring much action to the F1 scene. ...

Pleasantly Surprised

Advantages: Ease of travel/accomodations
Disadvantages: overly aggresive drinkers

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised with both the circuit and with the turnout for this race. Having been an avid CART and F-1 fan for more years than I can remember, I would recommend this venue to anyone who wanted to get a taste of not only a legendary racing facility, but to also take the time and wander out into the country to take in some of the sights and meet the locals. Indianapolis has done itself proud in attracting and keeping high quality sporting events to a lovely, progressive city. The "improvements" to the track to accomodate F-1 racing was no small engineering task, and while (to purists) it may not be a classic venue, as Monaco, Silverstone, or Monza, it was a fine effort and a job well done to make for interesting racing. From what I have gathered from persons very closely associated with some ...

Great New Track

Advantages: Overtaking
Disadvantages: Twisty

This track was used for the first time last year, but I have to say it is a great addition to the F1 calendar. There was a lot of talk before the event, speculation as to the design of the track? How much of the original Indianapolis track would renmain, would F1 cars really drive around in circles? The answer is no, and despite retaining very little of the original and historic track, they have produced a great F1 circuit. Its main feature is a long banked corner (from the original oval) which leads in to a long start/finish straigh, which is ended by a slow right-left corner. This is great because the banked corner allows trailing cars to closely follow the leading car through the turn, and then have a great shot at getting a slip stream down the main straight and out brake the other car in to the slow first turn ...
