I recently booked a last minute holiday through Inghams online for my parents and sisters to visit Austria for a week. The online booking system was flawless and the tickets arrived promptly. I booked them all (poor little me was left to house sit!) a week on the Inghams “Taste of Austria” holiday which travels to a number of Austrian resorts, with some of the holidays giving the resort name but in other cases is allocated on arrival. The holidays also travel from a number of British airports; Bristol, Manchester and Newcastle were available for the dates my parents wanted to travel. My family visited the resort Mayrhofen and flew from Manchester airport. The accomodation was in rooms that could accommodate up to 3 people but my family had to have two rooms as there were four of them. This worked out well as the website allowed you to select ajoining rooms. The holiday was very reasonably priced at £299 half board, per person.
On the morning they were due to set off, my mother’s clock radio went off with the news “five Britain’s killed in Austrian coach crash” and quick consultation of teletext revealed that it was tourists travelling with Inghams that were involved. This led my mother into a mad panic, my dad just lay in bed claiming it was “an omen” and my sisters were relatively indifferent (probably as they weren’t really awake). I have to admit to being a bit concerned as I had visions of them being stranded at the airport as Inghams were now a coach and driver down and as I’d booked the holiday I’d be the one to blame if it turned out to be a disaster.
As the holiday was a bit different to their standard Mediterranean beach holiday I didn’t really know how they’d find it, but they came home having really enjoyed it and without a single holiday disaster (they usually manage at least one!).
The coach transfer to their resort was fine and the accomodation was spotless. Breakfast was served in the two storey block they were staying in but for their evening meal they had to go to a restaurant. The restaurant turned out to be just a ten minute walk away and they ate there almost every night. The food they were served was limited to a €6 budget and sometimes this was noticeable however the food was always at a perfectly satisfactory standard.
There was lots to do at the resort though this mainly involved walking and cycling so it is perhaps not the holiday for you if you just want to laze around. They also managed a trip to Salzburg though I think they found this slightly disappointing, possibly from watching “The Sound of Music” a few too many times! The Inghams rep was the best they had experienced anywhere. She was a more mature lady and she knew absolutely everything they asked about the resort or the country as a whole. This is unlike most reps I have come across who generally can give you a list of all the pubs and clubs in the area but not much else.
As for Austria itself, they said that it seems quite old fashioned, particularly in terms of tourism as all shops are closed by 6pm and all pubs are closed by 10.30pm. They also found that the variety of food was very limited which is why they ate in the restaurant assigned to their hotel instead of eating out more.
As I personally only experienced the booking process with Inghams I can really only comment on that, though I would say it was excellent. However, I had to listen to excited reviews of the holday from my family so I think it’s fair to say that the “Taste of Austria” is a good one! Austria seems ideal for family holidays or a quiet week of cycling or walking, with stunning scenery, but is not for the people that want lots of sunshine, bars and lively nightlife. Inghams are a very good travel company, offering good holidays at reasonable prices, so please don’t let coach accidents put you off!
Advantages: Easy to book in a number of ways Disadvantages: Charged for Credit Card.
...We have travelled with Inghams for the last 6 years to various locations.
1 Chamonix in France – 2 times
2 Seefeld in Austria – 3 times
3 Lake Garda in Italy – once.
Each of these times we have had an excellent experience in terms of the friendly customer service at the booking of the holiday, right through to the resort representative
Booking the Holiday
There are a number of ways of booking the holiday 1 - Through a Travel Agent
2 – Through ... ...to book you holiday with Inghams is to PRE-BOOK it. Let me explain, as already mentioned we have travelled with Inghams in the past so we know some of the resorts. Armed with this information we ask for a pre-booking from for the following year. This, as the advert suggest “does exactly as it says”. The benefit for me is that I have saves 70 euros per person, again a great savaging as there is 5 of us - a grand total of 350 euros saved.

...booked a skiing holiday with Inghams to Andoora and found the whole process to be very good. When we booked through a travel agent the people taking the booking were very helpful and advised on various aspects of the holiday. As it was a skiing holiday we were not at first sure what ski packages to take out but they advised th at we could do this later for a small admin fee of £4 (was it worth it?). We got the tickets in good time although these ... ...package holiday and if our experience is anything to go by I would recommend booking a skiing holiday with Inghams as they made sure you were getting on OK and that everything was OK without being in your face all the time or constantly after money to go on excursions. ...

Advantages: Lots of fun things to do (santa park, reindeer ride, husky ride, snow mobile) Disadvantages: Inghams could have organised better for snowsuit + boot pick-up & return
Brief summary:
We have booked a Santa short break in Lapland this December (16th-19th, 4 days 3 nights) with Inghams based on the recommendation of a friend. The location is the Yllas skiing resort in a log cabin (half-board) via Kittila airport from Gatwick. The price is around £1700 for 2 adults and 1 child. Excursions (day 2 reindeer safari; day 3 reindeer safari and/or snowmobile safari) cost extra £300-350. Snow suits and boots are provided but not gloves/hat.
Important note: If you are English tea drinkers, bring your own favourite tea bags.
Arrival and check-in:
On the day we flew it was sub-zero (early morning) in the UK and when we arrived there (Kittila airport) the temperature was just a bit lower (-3 degree C) but with lots and lots of snow + ice.
On the coach we were given our welcome pack ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Lapland (Finland)
Advantages: snow, snow and more snow Disadvantages: none
I have been to Finnish Lapland 5 times (and done reviews on each of the resorts here on ciao)
firstly Lapland is more than just the whole santa thing - if that's what you want then that's great but some of them are rushed and expensive so shop around, read reviews and do your research
each time we have gone we have gone for a week, self catering in a cabin, this suits our family needs as we like to have space and cater for ourselves - we have gone with inghams and crystal ski, neilsens also go there (crystal ski has now stopped going there)
at each of the resorts you can always book husky, reindeer, santa and snowmobile trips and many more such as ice fishing - your best option is to book your trips with inghams, even if you don't travel with them they are still the cheapest and probably the best so if you do go there with another ...
Advantages: magical walks through the woods Disadvantages: maybe getting a but too commercial?
we went to yllas for christmas 07 and we decided to that for value for money it was far better to go on a week holiday there with inghams rather than the shorter santa breaks
our flight was very early and from bristol, flying into kittila - we went with inghams and booked to stay in a log cabin self catering
the transfer from the airport was about an hour and the roads are very straight - we arrived at our little cabin which was like a little row of terraced cabins, 4 canins in total in a row and about 5 sets of rows, the cabin was called lumpunko and is classified as the yllas log cabins with inghams
yllas is a traditional lappish village, it is very spread out and you do have to walk a lot to get anywhere - this is something that we loved, it was just the most magical experience walking through the woods in the snow ...
