I have stayed on I-Drive for 8 years running, at 3 different hotels. There is a good price range of hotels here from cheap and basic to very very luxurious - depending on which end you stay at! The North end is the cheaper and closer to Universal Studios, Belz Outlets etc. The Southern end is becoming very much the business class as it is close to the massive conference centre complex.
I prefer to stay in the central part, where all parks and amenities are handy. The Wyndham Hotel is fab - an Oasis!
Since we first went there in the early 90's, the area has grown and grown. There are now lots of hotels and apartments on roads parallel to I-Drive, close enough to enjoy the amenities but not actually on the main drive.
For kids - try Chuckie Cheese, I don't know a single young (2-10) kid who doesn't love it. Great Pizzas, lots of climbing around and then collecting as many tickets as your pockets can hold from playing games and swapping them for a few bits of plastic!
Another trip to try is the Airboat rides. It is a great hour or two and you may well see lots of gators. It is supposed to be better at night when their eyes glow red!
We spend many an hour wandering around the huge supermarkets like Target, Walmart, k-Mart. They sell everything. Leave all your tolietries at home, and when you wake up in the middle of your first night when you can't sleep, drive out to Walmart and get what you need for the hols there. Much cheaper, lovely selection and you can just leave the dregs behind saving weight in your cases for other things!
We prefer to be a bit more selective now for our meals, and go to the likes of Bahama Breeze (very very busy but enjoy the ambience as you wait), or TuTu Tango (Tapas). The ponderosa etc is excellent value but after a few years of the same old stuff we avoid it now!
Hope this helps some of you!

There are some great shopping arcades on International Drive too with lots of small specialist shops.

Advantages: Slap bang in the middle of International Drive, very family friendly, great pool Disadvantages: Ground floor rooms around the pool are slightly smaller and older looking
