Inuit Dog Sled Journey, Greenland

.... It was breath taking. I have been up the Norwegian coast and round the Land of the Midnight Sun but nothing could prepare one for this quiet magnificence. Greenland is larger than Australia or the whole of Europe and yet it only has a population of about 17,000. It is 85% covered in ice. Our first stop was Qaqortoq which is one the main CITIES, having approximately 3,000 people living there all in these brightly coloured houses, made of wood and TIN!! We also visited Narsarsaq where there is an "International airport" which has a weekly flight to Denmark! Greenland has very little industry and is mostly supported by Denmark. It was strange to be in a place, which did not "accommodate" tourists, just a State owned supermarket, which sold very familiar imported goods!! ...was that little bit longer for flying to Amsterdam first, they chose to show two flims, which were in English with Dutch subtitles, and quite up to date. The seats were as comfortable as you're going to get, with just about enough legroom, and I wasn't in too much pain when the time for touchdown came. Overall, I cannot recommend KLM highly enough. And if, like me, you're a big fan of the wilderness, this flight offers the added bonus of flying up and over Greenland - a priceless experience just by itself.... Read review

Advantages: Explore the whole Capital on foot in less than 30minutes
Disadvantages: No night life!!

...Qaqortoq when translated means “The White Place” and although there are only just over 3,000 inhabitants it is still regarded as “The Big City”. It is also the hub of life in South Greenland. It is naturally centred around the harbour where you can find trawlers, cargo ships and some yachts belonging to the more adventurous traveller. The fact that icebergs are often found in the harbour is just a reminder of how far North we are and of the hazards of these Arctic waters. The black-tarred log building on the waterfront was shipped to Greenland log by log in 1797. It was designed by the Danish royal architect, Kirkerup and prefabricated in Denmark The blacksmith’s shop, which was built in yellow stone in 1871, now houses the Qaqortoq museum.
