Loch Ness is huge
Advantages: beautiful scenery, interesting history and attractions Disadvantages: add good weather to fully enjoy
I visited Loch Ness in May. This was my second visit. The first time we visited was a brief drive-by on the way up to the Scottish Highlands a few years ago. This time we stayed at a hotel in Pitlochry, which was about 2 hours drive away. A little further away than we had planned, (we didn't realise that most of the tourist attractions were situated on east side of the Loch). So we had to drive up towards Inverness and then round, through the city, ... ...trees that were screening the Loch from the roadside. When we saw the Loch at it's full glory, it was was like looking at a sparkling ocean stuck down in the middle of the countryside. It was huge! The first stop we visited was Loch Ness 2000 Exhibition in Drumnadrochit. Don't be fooled by their flashy website, the actual exhibition was rather disappointing. I guess my expectations were raised a little too high. We walked around the poorly lit displays, ...

What's the story In..verness
Advantages: Shops and scenery Disadvantages: Need a car to get to most scenic places
...of parks in and around Inverness, but the best is probably Whin Park which has kiddie's climbing frames, chutes, swings (quite a lot for children to go on), a boating pond, a shop that sells ice cream and sweets, and a train that goes right around the park. It is quite a big park so plenty to keep the kids amused and a good place for picnics.
Supermarkets are varied - Morrisons, Tescos (three of them), and the Cop-op. There is also Lidls and Farmfoods ... ...too around Inverness too - most have swimming pools. Lots of different events take place in and around Inverness each weekend and over the summer holidays - the Highland Games (held at the Bught Park in Inverness) each July, the Glenurquhart Highland Games (held at nearby Glenurquhart, 20 minutes or so drive away) each August, and the Snowman Ralley (if you are interested in Ralley driving - held each year in February, I think, around Inverness. ...

Arguably the most scenic railway line in the UK
Advantages: Impressive scenery Disadvantages: Cold carriages, weather can be a factor in spoiling views, not many services
...back in January this year. The summer service may well be different therefore from the one in operation during the winter months.
It's safe to say that the rolling stock isn't the operating company's best equipment. The twin cars used on both the outbound and return journeys (a change of set was carried out at Kyle) both suffered from poor (or in the case of the return trip, non-existent) heating - the driver sympathised with us but could only report ... ...The seats were reasonably comfortable for what was a one-way trip of just over 2 hours, although the seats with tables in 1st Class are the best bet, allowing a little more leg room and space to put bags, etc. The guard was friendly and tickets can be bought on the train (a handy option since the station office at Dingwall was shut) - several people were taking advantage of this.
This was a Friday in January and there was only one service to Kyle ...

Strathnairn's Got the "X-Tractor"
Advantages: Lots to see. Educational. Good value, free parking. Close to Inverness. Disadvantages: Very limited public transport links. Outdoors so a bit weather dependent.
Strathnairn Farmers Association Agricultural Working Vintage Rally & Display Day (its full title!) is an annual one day event held in September. It all happens in a field at Daviot Farm, about 6 miles south of Inverness, just off the A9. It is very easy to find and is well sign-posted from the A9 in both directions.
2009 was the third year of the event, and it was bigger, better and more professionally run than ever before. The sun even shone and ... ...So What Can You See?
Obviously, the event will be of particular interest for those with an enthusiasm for vintage vehicles, tractors particularly, and an interest or connection with agriculture but there is so much more – something for everyone!
• Working Tractors & Machinery – approximately 50 tractors dating from between 1939 and 1980 demonstrating a variety of implements, but mainly various ploughs, a Marshall Mill dating from 1920 and ...

A small hamlet on the west coast of scotland
Advantages: Fantastic beaches wonderful scenery Disadvantages: I am not there now
The Back of Keppoch is a few houses a mile north of Arisaig on the west coast of Scotland on the road to the isles. This settlement is on the coast.
This year we stayed in Arisaig in a flat. We revisited The back of Keppoch where we have stayed several times in previous years. Take the b8008 out of Arisaig or if you are traveling on the newer A830 just after Arisaig there is a left hand turn onto the b8008. Take this road and on the left hand side ... ...to the settlement of the back of Keppoch. This small road getting narrower leads to the end of the track at Gortenachullish
When we stayed at the back of Keppoch years ago we stayed in a caravan. (It's no longer there storm damage one year and the people who owned it were fairly old so I imagine they did not replace it)
However there are 2 or three places with static vans and some camping facilities too. See http://www.scottishcampingguide.com/link.php?n=71&c= ...
