Inverness,the capital of the Scottish Highlands,is a comparatively small city but has considerable charm and interest for the visitor. It has numerous historical links to the rather turbulent history of the Highlands and has a number of interesting historical buildings such as Inverness Castle,the Town Hall, and the houses and hotels along the riverside. Since it is an important tourist centre much visited by exiled Scots and their descendants from the USA,Canada,Australia,New Zealand and other countries,its hospitality industry is well developed.
The accommodation base is good with several high quality hotels,well equipped guest houses and very homely bed and breakfast places. Most of these offer comfortable rooms and very hearty Scottish-style breakfasts.
Inverness, also has a wide range of restaurants including a surprisingly large number of ethnic eateries of real quality.
On the two occasions I stayed in Inverness I found the shopping opportunities to be very good.Overseas visitors in particular seem to be avid buyers of things Scottish such as whisky,tartans,kilts, Cashmere sweaters,unique Scottish foodstuffs and the like. Britain's northern most entertainment haumt, The eden Theatre, is a fine spot for entertainment and attracts international performers. Inverness is also a fine base for the Highlands including the famous Loch Ness, the Highland Wildlife Centre, Culloden,Cawdor Castle and the very scenic glens.
