IonaIona is a historical island and although it's small has plenty of beautiful scenery. It was the burial ground of Scottish, Irish and Norwegian kings. I went to pay my respects to John Smith, the former leader of the Labour party, who is buried in the grounds of the abbey. It's a very peaceful place even though you get quite a few tourists in the summer. If you're going from the Scottish mainland you have a long journey. The Calmac ferry takes you from Oban to Mull and then there's a drive to the South of the island and another short ferry ride over to Iona. If you want to stay on the island make sure you book a head as there are very few B&Bs. Sheila O'Flanagan has got the knack of writing about her characters and making you feel as if they are real - I know that this is what authors are supposed to do, but with many books that you read, you know that it is made up. With O'Flanagan's stories, they could be real.
With this story, however, parts of it were far fetched. The story begins with Iona Harper waiting for her husband coming home from work. They are trying for a family and seem really close. Iona worries when he does not arrive and she calls her sister, who comes round and phones the police. What happens next takes Iona into a different life, a one involving bigamy and another wife called Sally.
