Taiping-The Town of Eternal Peace

Advantages: pleasant relaxed environment; lots to see and do
Disadvantages: not well publicised

Taiping in the Northern Malaysian State of Perak was formerly known as Klian Pauh, a place famous for its tin deposits. It was renamed Taiping to mark the end of the Larut War in 1874 and 'Taiping' comes from the Chinese word 'Tai-peng' which means eternal peace. It is located near to the State Capital of Ipoh, which is itself a very pleasant and well planned town.

After 1874 there was considerable development in Taiping and it was ...
...rest house, a court house, an airstrip, a prison, a telegraph office, a museum, a lake garden and a railway station!

Today there are a number of attractions for visitors in Taiping. These include the Perak Museum in Jalan Museum which was established in 1886 and is the oldest museum in the country. It houses three main collections dealing with anthropology, zoology and local history, and houses over 3,000 artifacts. Open daily from ... more

Ipoh, A Very Nice City

Advantages: Clean. Well Planned. Lovely Architecture.
Disadvantages: A long journey from Singapore or Johore Bahru

...every year suggested I visit Ipoh and Kellies Castle which is not far away.Pearl assured me I would like Ipoh. Well I took her advice and accompanied her, my younger sister and her husband on a day tour of Ipoh. I most certainly was impressed with what we saw. The first thing I noticed was how clean Ipoh appears to be-there was little sign of litter and the streets were not clogged with traffic. The main city centre was well planned and after we ...
...the lovely old Colonial style Ipoh Club and the miner's favourite, the FMS Bar and Restaurant. After a morning cup of coffee we drove round the city and I noticed the gorgeous looking Railway Station. It looked like something out of the Arabian Nights -no wonder it is called the "Taj Mahal" of Ipoh. Then we came across several verdant public parks and the wonderful architecture of several schools founded by the British - Scots my friend Pearl said- ...

Kuala Kangsar:Heritage Town

Advantages: History.Culture. Good Food.Handicrafts
Disadvantages: Limited accommodations.

The little town of Kuala Kangsar, although at present not a major tourist destination,is nonetheless a very attractive place and well worth a day trip if you are visiting either Ipoh or Penang in Malaysia. Kuala Kangsar is one of the oldest towns in the "silver state" of Perak and is the royal capital of that state. The town has a lot of very attractive heritage buildings ranging from the Sultan's Palace, the Old Palace, the Royal Museum, the utterly delightful Ubudiah Mosque and two of Malaysia's most famous schools, the Clifford School and the Malay College. The latter is often called :The Eton of the East. The River Perak winds its way through the town and river trips are available. The film Anna and the King used Kuala Kangsar for some of its shots and another unique product from KK is the gourd shaped water pitcher known as the Labu ...

Kuala Kangsar. The Royal Town

Advantages: Fine Heritage;Unique Handicrafts; Quiet and relaxing
Disadvantages: Lacks Night life

there are several good seafood eateries in town. The nearby town of Taiping is something of a gourmet's paradise and the state capital of Ipoh is an easy drive from Kuala Kangsar. If you are on a trip to Malaysia try and include a visit to KK-it is a very nice,laid-back, little town.! ...
