Advantages: Culture if you go out and get it, excellent nightlife Disadvantages: Loads of drunken yobs in summer, not cheap
...you must take is to see the Palace of Malia. This is about 2 miles from the centre of Malia, you can either walk along the road (sign posted to Ayios Nikolaos, any bus bound for here will stop at the palace enroute) or along the beach. This has never been reconstructed and is worth getting a book for as it is difficult to work out what some of the remains are (I used my Rough Guide to Crete).
My favourite excursion was to Iraklion - one of the two major cities on the island. We caught the public bus (much better than paying an absolute fortune for a guided coach tour!), which stops on the main road in Malia. It costs about £1.50 one way - which, when you consider it is about 30 miles away is an absolute bargain! The bus stops just outside the city walls and one of the first things you see is the old fortress. This wasn't open when...

Advantages: Lots to do, quite cheap Disadvantages: gets really busy
...I have recently been on holiday to Crete and i found it a good destination for young people. We stayed at the resort of Malia, which seems to be the most lively resort with plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from. Most of the restaurants offer semi traditional Greek food as well things like chips etc. We found the old town better or food in a more traditional greek setting.
There is also plenty to do during the day - a visit to the Minoan palace of Knossoss on which the legend of the minotaur was based is well worth it. Most of the items found here are on display at the museum in Iraklion. There is also a Minoan palace a short walk from the resort of Malia. A visit to the former leper colony on the island of Spinalonga is also an unusual trip. Theres always the beach as well of course.
IN summary i would rate Crete...

Advantages: no comments Disadvantages: actually nothing
...is a big city with traffic, noise and all the chaos that goes with a large population. It's the closest place to ancient Knossos and for that reason many people go here first. It is the capital of the island so many of the travel agents, major hotels, car rental agencies, restaurants, nightlife and tours are based here, but that does not mean you have to be.
Chania and Rethymnon to the west of Iraklion are more my speed and maybe yours too. They are smaller but they have plenty of life, with great restaurants, hotels, and all that you will need, without the congestion of Iraklion. The only drawback is that they are so far away from Eastern Crete, but that is not a good enough reason to not stay here, nor is it a good reason to stay in Iraklion and make that your base because of it's accessability to the rest of the island.
There are also...
