Hotel Pekin Moscow
I have read many reviews on this hotel & most of them are bad... very bad. I was there September 2007 & the staff are terrible. I have never been treated with such utter contempt. Not one person will help you. They are utterly useless & often aggressive. I booked my room in advance. I faxed the details, they faxed my confirmation with room cost & reservation number. I confirmed all this by email but when I got there a few days later they knew nothing of my reservation, I showed them their own fax & they still had no clue. After staying two days they decided to put the rate up & the manager told me 'Give me that paper' when I showed her the fax. When I complained this was insane to put the cost up after we had agreed the rate, she just started making out going phone calls & glared at me.

Advantages: A unique and interesting experience, some fascinating sights Disadvantages: Can be a confusing and not as beautiful as most European capital cities
. One minute you can be somewhere quite lovely, the next you'd doubt you were in a first world city at all.
Getting Around
We found Moscow a very easy city to navigate our way around, but a good map is an essential piece of kit. Our Insight fold out map, purchased from Stanford's in Covent Garden prior to our trip proved invaluable. The "must see" tourist attractions are all contained within one small area of the city which can be walked around easily. However if you are not lucky enough to be staying very central, and with hotel prices as expensive as they are in Moscow this is likely, the metro system is your saviour.
The Metro
Or Metpo as known to Russians! Once you've mastered the system, it's a fantastic way to zip around the city and exceptionally cheap at 15 roubles (29p) a ticket purchased from the "kacca" lady. You will ...

Advantages: Central, great views, the food, the service Disadvantages: Price
We stayed at the National Hotel in Moscow last August (03) for 3 nights. This hotel has to be one of the best hotels in Moscow. It is centrally located, overlooking the Kremlin and is easy to find if you are unlucky enough to have to drive there yourself. I would recommend you use a taxi is possible as the cars in Moscow don't know about speed limits or safe distances.
The Hotel reception personnel all spoke excellent English and we had no difficulty being understood. Foreign currenty conversion was also easy using the desk in the hotel who were happy to give Americal dollars or Russian rubels.
Our room was okay, but then again we were not paying much compared to the best rooms. Each evening the beds were prepared for us and a chocolate mint left!
We used the conservatory snack bar just beyond reception a few times and found ...

Irbis Hotel is a unique combination of European quality and Russian hospitality. Here you will be welcomed with unforgettable warmth, comfort and cosy atmosphere. Constant rat race and tension of the modern life are so intense, that possibility of sufficient rest became really precious and important. After a very busy day, meetings and sightseeing, in our apartments you will feel like in \\\Heaven\\\". The hotel offers 152 places in 97 rooms: from standard modern furnished to luxurious perfectly designed apartments. The exotic names such as \\\"Orange\\\", \\\"Pistachio\\\", \\\"Glassy\\\", will override all your expectations and you definitely will have the edge to come and stay with us again! Irbis was built in 1956 and in 2003 was overtaken by Maxima Hotels Group, which has established new standards of service and is offering guests comfortable staying in the heart of Russia, the capital-Moscow. The personnel will regard you with courteous and attentive attitude proving the best tradition of Russian hospitality. The luxurious rooms differ from each other. The main difference among them is that the designer skilfully used colour, creating wonderful, romantic and unforgettable masterpiece."
