before ours to fascinate and conquer us. A never-ending place who promise you relax, comfort and a squisible cuisine. Restaurant "the Alzavola" Chef the Luigi Giudici proposes one kitchen based on the products of the territory, from the lago fish like coregone, tinca, Persian, to the gamberi of lago, the meats of Rovato and Sarnico, to the immense one chosen of wines of the Franciacorta. All he is produced in house, from the fresh paste to the pastry shop, the bread. In Franciacorta a tradition of enogastronomico tourism exists that cannot be betrayed. Advantages: History, beaches, amenities, weather, friendly people, now closer to airport Disadvantages: Too busy during summer months, mad drivers
...to Lagos from Faro airport is no longer the ordeal it used to be. The newly built motorway means that the airport can be reached in just over an hour drive, and the traffic crossing the Algarve is now more evenly distributed between the two available main routes.
The best times to visit are before July and after the 15th September, unless you don't mind crowded beaches. The period comprising the above months is when the Portuguese take their holidays, so "half" of Portugal tends to move down to the Algarve.
Another positive aspect of Lagos is that you don’t feel as if you’re in the middle of a town built to cater for mass tourism. The hotels are well integrated in the town’s landscape and, despite the construction of some less attractive apartment blocks alongside the Marina; Lagos still has lots of character.

Advantages: It's a very charming holiday destination Disadvantages: On the touristy side... (if this bothers you)
...can be found at the tourist office, but they will most likely already have approached you on the street!
For hotels and appartments, check a travelguide. According to what I heard, accomodation must be reserved beforehand when going there July/August.
THE BEACHES:
You have the choice between Lagos' very own Meia Preia, a 4km long sandbeach and smaller sand beaches, tucked away between Lagos' characteristic rocks, that provide a stunning view and invite for exploring of the hidden-away grottos. The beaches are clean and rather nice.
HIGHLIGHTS:
I strongly recommend booking a boat trip to the grottos. Take a camera with you and enjoy the breathtaking sights that will be brought to you. Only downside: Not all guides speak good English.
If you are reasonably fit and up for it, book a Kajak tour at the Lagos Surf Centre (Price: 25 Euros...

Advantages: Spectacular lava eruptions at night Disadvantages: Cloudy at times
...A volcano is like a candle, one year the lava drips on one side, the next year it drips on the other. We visited in March 2004, and stayed at the Hotel Arenal Los Lagos on the north face and could see the lava from our bed!
You can find more info on this helpful site (we booked with them), a map of the lava flow & the locations of the hotels: http://www.arenal.net
We explored the area because we plan on returning with our families. The hotels we saw with a direct view are: Los Lagos, Volcano Lodge, Arenal Paraiso, Montana de Fuego, and Tabacon. The los Lagos having the best trails, and best views. The Arenal Lodge is way out on the lake, with not a good view of the lava, being to far away.
Often the area is cloudy, covering the crater, that's why it's important to stay in a hotel with direct view, just to be there when it clears up...
