Did you know that the Isle of Man has it's own Government and own Money? But don't worry you don't have to exchange your pennies because the Isle of Man accepts English, Scottish and Irish Sterling!
Did you know that the T.T stands for Tourist Trophy?! huh?!
Did you know that the Isle of Man only has 2 hospitals, 5 High Schools, original horse and trams from the victorian era, and that it is famous for the T.T Races?! well, if not, what are you playing at. Get those tickets booked and get yourself on the island!
Many people have never actually been to the Isle of Man and most people don't know where it is! It is situated in the Irish sea between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Your probably thinking, 'well what makes the Isle of Man so different?' It is a self governing kingdom and has it's own parliament (Tynwald), laws, traditions, cuisine, culture, postage stamps, language and
currency. When i tell people about the Isle of Man and mention we have no motorways, most reply with 'what side of the road do you drive on?!' Don't worry, like the English, we drive on the left side!
About the Isle of Man:
The Isle of Man is 33 miles long and 13 miles wide. More than 40% of the Island is uninhibited! The Capital is Douglas, which offers a wide selection of places to stay. I recommend the Greysham, which is great for people on a budget! or if you want to spend a few more pennies The Empress, The Mount Murray (Castletown) or The sefton are three of the best hotels. If you don't fancy staying in Douglas, there is also the old capital, Castletown, Ramsey, Peel, Laxey, Port Erin or Port St. Mary. Tthe Tourist Information Centre is situation inside the Sea Terminal in Douglas and will be happy to advise you on where to stay on the Island. The shopping is not exactly exciting, however, they are some lovely little craft and gifts shops dotted around the Island, including Laxey Woollen Mills shop. There are plenty of places you can get the famous manx kippers too! There is plenty to do for the kids if you go on a family holiday: ManxLand (playarea), Bowling, Wildlife Park, mooragh park at Ramsey, Silverdale (can do peddleboats etc as well as usual park activities. You can also make your own plates, mugs, bowls, jugs etc at the Pottery art centre) plus beaches and the NSC swimming centre. For entertainment purposes, there is the cinema, Victorian Gaiety theatre, rollerskating, Erin Art's centre and the VillaMarina. Not forgetting the nightlife, which admittedly isn't the best. The thing with the Isle of Man is, is that everyone knows each other or knows of each other! You will walk through and bump into several people here and there. You can't get a way with anything on the Island! If you fancy a more quite weekend, there are plenty of glens and scenic walks to do as well as the tourist sites. Don't miss the victorian railways and trams. If you go at Christmas time you can get the train to Santa's Grotto, or at Easter to see the Easter bunny! The film industry is increasing rapidly and films such as Waking Ned and the New release, Black Ball were filmed on the Isle of Man. The scenery is absolutely fantastic. Coming from someone who lives on the Island, you might think i take advantage or such amazing views, but everyday you are reminded or the spectacular scenery because it is so small, you can't avoid it! The Isle of Man Tourist Information supplies a pass to see 4 different heritage sites for only £10 - that is saving at least £5 and take it for me, it is worth it. You can visit the Laxey Wheel, which is the largest working waterwheel in the world, House of Mannannan, which tells you the history of the Island, Peel Castle ruins and Castle Rushen and Rushen Abbey (you are likely to see people as they were in the olden days!) + many more. If your looking to get a job on the Island the largest sector is the finance sector. The majority of residences are accountants, bankers, and financial advisers. This is where the money lies.
Getting on and off the Island:
You can travel by sea or air, or swim if you think your up to it!! To get there by sea, you need to book with the Isle of Man Steam Packet. Prices vary from £19 single foot passenger or £38 return depending on where you get the boat from and obviously prices cost more with a car and passengers. You can go from Liverpool, Dublin, Heysham, or Belfast. Crossings last 2 1/2 hours during busy periods and 4 hours during winter season. To go by Air you can go from just about anywhere: Liverpool, London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City, London Luton, London Stansted, Belfast, Dublin, Manchester, Jersey, Birmingham, Blackpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Southampton, Bristol and East Midlands. Prices are a little more higher than the boat, however it is quicker. Prices vary from £59. Although it is a bit expensive to get on and off the Island, it is definately an Island not to be missed! however if you don't like rough boat crossings, i would recommend to take the plane during september to February!
Please bear in mind i have only mentioned a taster of things you can do on the Isle Of Man, but please take it from me, it is fantastic, even if you go for the weekend! Look forward to seeing you there!
