If you're lucky enough to be holidaying on Skye, make your way down the single track, dead-end road to Kylerhea. There you'll find a car park and a long but worthwhile walk to an otter hide and information centre run by the Forestry Commission. Go at dawn or dusk for the best chance of seeing these fascinating creatures. Want to take the otter theme further? Take the little ferry from Kylerhea across to the mainland near Bernera (it only operates in the summer months), and head south to Glenelg. Continue south and you will be in the area where Gavin Maxwell lived and wrote "Ring of Bright Water". The real tale of Maxwell and the otters he kept at the place he called Camusfearna in his books, is a fascinating and heart rending one. Nothing remains now but a memorial well off the beaten track. If you want to find it, email me and I'll give you details and map references.

Advantages: beautiful scenery, peaceful, silent Disadvantages: Very dependent on the season and the weather. And the weather is often fickle with tourists.
