My partner has always wanted to visit Skye, so last year we looked up some B&B's on the internet and picked one out. We booked for 3 nights, Sunday to Tuesday in September. We went in September to avoid the midges that everybody had warned us about.
We had to drive up from North Devon, so we broke the trip by staying at a Travelodge in Carlisle on the Satruday evening. For us it was a journey of some 400? miles and about 12 hours.
We wished we had booked for longer. We saw most of the island in the two days, however we only visited the main tourist attractions and if we had another two days we could have seen a bit more of off the beaten track.
We arrived on Skye on the Sunday afternoon, at the White Heathers Hotel in Kyleakin (pronounced Ky-lark-in). Kyleakin is just over the the Skye bridge and is the harbour where the ferry used to sale from before the bridge was built. (Don't mention the bridge by the way, it's a sore point!) However since we were there, the tolls have been removed, so I am sure that everyone is a bit happier now!
The White Heathers Hotel was lovely, overlooking the harbour and Castle Moil, and the proprieters Gillian and Craig made us really welcome. Gillian was full of knowledge about the island, and told us of several places to visit that weren't on the tourist map. Craig cooked us a lovely breakfast each day. Anyway, back to Skye itself.....
Skye is renowned for its fog, why else is it called "The Misty Isle?". When we were there Skye was its usual self, on the Monday it was foggy and poured down with rain for half of the day, but we travelled across the island to Portree, stopping at various points along the way. The scenery is outstanding and it is best to drive slowly due to the width of the roads, even if the locals do drive like Michael Schumacher!
We also went to Dunvegan Castle, Armadale Castle, the Portree Centre and many other places of interest. There are not hundreds of tourist attractions, but that is the beauty of Skye. Nobody would want to turn it into Blackpool. A lot of people take walking holidays on Skye and it is also full of Youth Hostels/Backpackers.
There are plenty of restaurants on the island, so you are spoiled for choice for food. There are also a couple of small garages, so you don't need to worry about buying fuel.
The lochs, moorland and mountains are just spectacular and I defy anybody to vist and not like Skye. My partner and I aren't into walking, or birds, or anything like that, but you cannot fail to be moved when you see such wonderful things.
If you are looking for clubs, excitement and loads to do then don't go to Skye. I don't know that I would take children there either as they would probably be bored as there are no theme parks. I think that Skye is a place for grownups!
If you are looking for a break from everyday life, and some peace and quiet, then please go visit!
We are planning to go back again next year, hopefully in May, June time, in the hope that it might be a bit sunnier. However we shall thouroughly enjoy it, whatever the weather.

I used to stay on Skye and found the night life not too bad, depending on the time of year you go whats available with ceilidhs and pubs and they have a lot of bands. I know what you mean about the bridge though. Have they improved anything for younger children? Tracyx

Advantages: beautiful scenery, peaceful, silent Disadvantages: Very dependent on the season and the weather. And the weather is often fickle with tourists.
