Nice for short stopovers, not for holidays
Advantages: Convenient or the airport, comfortable Disadvantages: Slow room service, booking was a hassle
...I decided to try the Crowne Plaza this time, as I have a gold card so thought I might get a bigger bed! And even have three hours to enjoy it. Reservations They could really use some lessons in how to make booking easy. I phoned the hotel to book it and was told to send a fax. I wrote the fax, explained that I needed the room from 7am to midday and tried to send it but the line was busy. I set auto redial, to retry ten times. Two hours later the ... ...I phoned again and was given a different number. Another half hour and still the fax could not get through to either number. I was about to phone up and ask for the manager's number when suddenly, success, it got through. The next morning I had received a reply that if I wanted to arrive after 6pm the previous evening, I needed to send my credit card number. I tried to fax - it was busy. In the end I phoned and gave the details over the phone, which ...

Beautiful Location - Dreadful Experience
Advantages: Architecture, Location, View Disadvantages: Incompetent Management , Highly Overpriced
Ajia is a beautiful old Ottoman "Yali" or waterside mansion overlooking the Bosporus in Istanbul. The charm of the old building, the view and location are second to none. The interior is very nicely decorated in a modern, minimalist sort of a way. Very appealing.
However, unfortunately, you should not stay there. Loud music plays all night preventing you from sleeping; room service delivers delicious food, but certainly not what you ordered; preparations ...

In the lap of Turkish luxury on the outer Istanbul extremities
Advantages: Superb facilities, friendly staff Disadvantages: Remote location and complicated to get to the tourist areas, noisy weddings
...BUSINESS HOTEL TITANIC Titanic is a hotel chain in Istanbul, with other hotels dotted around various locations in the city. This hotel is located some 20km from the historic centre of the Europe side, and on the other side of the water on the Asia side. It’s a very new hotel, having opened for business in June 2008, and looks quite incongruous in the immediate area, which looks a little tatty and is under development, with many large buildings ... ...of the doomed ship The Titanic has appeared in a glass case in the restaurant recently. I did wonder if the hotel was named after the ship. But don’t they know it sank? PATTISERIE I have never used the patisserie, which is a fancy area to the right of reception in the window which now has a big sign outside saying “Titanic Coffee”. There is an impressive glass case full of cakes and pastries I have never seen anyone purchase, and if you look ...

Ooh la la in Istanbul?
Advantages: Cheap; handy location Disadvantages: No air con so pretty bad in summer; tiny rooms
When we stayed at the Paris Hostel and Hotel in Istanbul it was at the end of a three month circular trip and we wanted to try some different accommodation to the place we’d stayed at some fourteen weeks earlier. A week before we were due to arrive back in Istanbul we did an online search for something suitable and found the Paris H&H. I have no idea why it’s called "hostel AND hotel". Maybe they think a dormitory means a hostel and private rooms ... ...with very few, if any, frills. It is hostel standard, or one or two star standard in hotel-speak. Had we known then just how much money we had left at the end of the trip, we’d have spent more, isn’t hindsight great?
The hostel is in a very useful location in the Sultanahmet district approximately halfway between the Grand Bazaar and the Aghia Sophia. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants and even a supermarket nearby. The nearest tram stop ...

Hotel Poem, quirky and friendly
Advantages: friendly, clean and unusual Disadvantages: Small so in high season book in advance
Hotel Poem is an excellent small hotel in the mid-range of prices and with a quirky, family feel to it. The name of the hotel comes rom the fact that the 16 rooms are named after famous Turkish poems (which are displayed, translated into English). Together with the friendly staff the hotel seemed to really care about the people who stayed in it and wanted them to have a good time. The location is ideal awith around five minutes walking time to the ... ...foot of Terbiyik Solak Street (No. 12), just off Akbiyik Caddesi a main road in the ancient Sultanahmet area. The hotel offer airport pickups. The rooms varied in size a little although they were all quite small. One of the rooms we stayed in (we moved because we wanted two beds not because there was anything wrong with the first room!) was really very small so with the double bed in the room there was only space to squeeze past at one side. All ...
