Montserrat is in many ways untouched by western traits. There is much poverty, but it is never felt. Fruits grow freely on the trees to eat and there are water springs to drink from. If you are hot you can knock on anyones door to ask for ice water, and you'll get it. There are makeshift bars along nearly every road, and drinks are dirt cheap! There are no Macdonalds or takeaways, and when i last visited, there was one newly opened pizza parlour!
You can find better food by travelling to Runway Ghaut, where a woman runs a Roti takeout service from her kitchen, the best you'll ever taste.
Local cuisine includes Iguana and 'Mountian Chicken' which is in fact large Frogs that live in the North, hillier part of the island.
