Jakarta is on the island of Java and is the capital city of Indonesia (an archipelago of about 14,000 islands with Java being the main island).
As a capital city it is very noisy, busy, dirty and exciting. There are quite a few things to do in Jakarta, whether you are there working or playing. The majority of past times however, seem to include drinking copious amounts of alcohol and crawling from one bar or club to another.
If you idea of fun ... ...to try some of the other past times, such as shopping at any one of the big shopping complexes (Blok M, the Hilton, etc) or try visiting Indonesia’s answer to Sea World or Taman Mini (Indonesia in miniature).
This city is well worth seeing, and is constantly changing so it’s different from one year to the next. However, I would only recommend this as a stop off to break a long journey, or a shopping trip before going on somewhere quite to relax...... ...

Advantages: Transport centre. Disadvantages: Smelly, polluted and expensive
...that's what the locals call Jakarta and it's well named. The durian is a large tropical fruit with a phenomenally strong and unpleasant smell - a ripe one can be scented at a distance of several dozen meters. Jakarta is also a LOT more expensive than pretty much anywhere else on Java and you'll pay twice or three times as much as elsewhere even for taxis, food and accommodation. The weather is terrible, you can’t enjoy it, and it has become an aircon life from hotel to car to shopping mall.
Forget about shopping, everything is very expensive; there are more designer shops there then there is in Europe.
The hotels are fantastic and very good ...

If you ever want to visit Jakarta, you'd better be careful since corruption was once high in this city and the traffic's a killer, to boot. The small of exhaust and smog plus the putrid humidity hit my nostrils. And I wanted to go home straightaway. Next, I tried ... ...sell it to poor unknowing tourists charges almost 3 times the price stated on the phonecard. Even when I confronted him, he said it was a "special" price. Right. And cows can jump over the moon. As I was leaving, he reduced the price in a bid to get us to buy it from him, but still about double the stated price. Sigh. No chance. And this is why it's not a good city to visit. Ever. ...
