For a starters, fellow ciao-ers, I think this has been listed under the wrong category – Jamboree has been listed as a “bar”, but I would have described it as a “club”, but then, who cares I still write my op in the same way as I was going to!

-=Entrance Fee=-
I went to Jamboree twice in my week’s stay in Barcelona – I went on a Sunday night and a Wednesday night – both night’s cost 8 Euros, but I heard rumours that it cost less on other nights. (I’m not catching another flight just to find out).

Once you have paid not only do they stamp your arm (the next was hilarious walking round saying that you had “jam” on your arm) but they give you a little ticket with a stamp on it you know “just in case”. I felt it was a little bit over kill, but there you are.

-=Dress code=-
I think that the simplest thing to say is that there isn’t one. You could literally wear what you liked – most clubs I go to turn you away if you are wearing trainers – not here. Didn’t notice anywhere to check in your jacket – but who cares? The Spanish all tied them round there waists, therefore, so did we. I felt like a right plonker, but then I looked around, and at least I fitted in with the crowd.

-=Drinks cost=-
My advice is to be sloshed before you go in – it’s expensive to drink once inside. In a bar two doors down, 2 “shots” of vodka (approx 1/4 – 1/2 pint each) plus four cokes (so that the vodka could be split between four people) cost about 12 Euros – the same thing in Jamboree cost around 18-20 Euros (which was the same cost as our 4* hotel).
However, if you are a beer drinker, than a San Miguel (bottled) costs around 2 Euros, which seemed to be the same price everywhere (except at the supermarket which was 2 euros for a four pack)!

-=Inside=-
There are two floors to the club, but the upper floor only contains the toilets – I only went in there once, and I was too drunk to really remember it – lets just say that I thought a Scottish girl was talking to me in Spanish. Anyway, there were only three cubicles, and they weren’t altogether that clean, and I had trouble finding one that locked. The toilets were probably the worst thing about the entire place.

The main floor was sort of split-level – the bar area, plus some sofas for the people who were too out of it too dance, then a few (and I literally only mean one or two) stairs down onto the dance floor – there was also a stage for any live acts.

On the First night that we went (Sunday), we arrived (2am) just as the live act was coming to an end – it wasn’t my usual sort of thing, but it was good none the less. It was what I can only describe as jazz with rapping. The Spanish people around as seemed to know all of the words, and were shouting “yeah” in the appropriate places. Me and my friends looked at each other, we were all thinking the same thing – when in Rome… Do like the Romans!! We starting shouting “yeah” in all the right places, although I’m pretty certain at one point they said “We hate the British” – we still shouted “yeah”.

Anyway, my point is, there was a great atmosphere in there that night, and it made you feel like joining in. I was sort of sorry when the live music ended – the guidebook we had said the live music normally ended around 1am, so we were lucky to have heard any at all.

When the live music ended, a DJ came on, and mainly played Soul, RnB and Hip-Hop – examples of songs that came on where: 50 Cents - In the Club, a couple of Snoop Doggy Dogg tunes, and some cheesier numbers, like Destiny’s Child – Independent Women. The dance floor was pretty packed, and a couple of people decided to get up the stage (yes, I was dragged up there at one point), but no one seemed to mind.

The second night that we went, we didn’t hear any live music, but it may have ended by the time we got there (2am again), and the club was generally less crowded – I could actually move on the dance floor, but the atmosphere was still good. There seemed to be a clear mixture of locals and tourists but there was none of the aggravation that I expected.

This was a good club – small but good. I’m sorry that we didn’t go more often, but I can only handle two 5am bedtimes in one week. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to find, but it is in the guidebook – the way we found it was to stumble along La Rambla, and head into one of side streets that lead into the main squares (we found the squares in the daytime), and voila! There it is. Alternatively, find an English speaking local to give you directions. Have fun when you go, I certainly did.
