Before I start, please note that I have holidayed in all inc. resorts in the following destinations before and am therefore basing my review on comparisons to these resorts: Dom Rep, Mexico, Kenya, Egypt plus a Caribbeancruise. (all inc. being a package holiday whereby all meals, drinks and activities are included in the price....usually!)
ARRIVAL: We stayed for 2 weeks from 25 Mar - 5 Apr 07, a party of 4 people. About a 5.5 hr flight from Manchester. At Sharm El Sheikh Airport make sure you collect your own baggage as it's a very short walk to the coach, otherwise there is a fee for the trolley, which will vary according to who is issuing them! If you are planning on visiting the pyramids you must get your visa here - it will cost 15 US$. Coach transfer is only 10 mins. I would say that you don't really need to convert any money to Egyptian pounds, we took £25 in Egyptian and struggled to spend it as the English pound is widely accepted.
HOTEL: We booked with Portland Direct on the internet who has rated it as 5*. The hotel has been open for only 8 months and it shows as arriving at the reception you will be amazed by the décor and furnishings, they are very grand, modern and immaculate. Marble surfaces galore, fountains, massive chandeliers and very cosy sofa's! Leave your cases at reception and they will be brought to your room by the bell boys. You can be taken to your room on the golf buggy or you can find it yourself from the map they give you. The complex is massive, it could be a problem if you are not too mobile. The nearest town is Na'ama Bay which is a half hour taxi ride away. There is a hotel shuttle service which costs 5 euro per person return trip. Na'ama Bay is a smart, lively place.
ROOMS: We were allocated a family room for only 2 of us - absolutely massive, the biggest room we have ever had on a package holiday. There are twin beds pushed together and two child beds with a sliding divider door between them. We had a balcony overlooking the pool (as do most rooms), and a great big walk in power shower - no bath. The room was so big it was a pain going to the toilet during the night as it was a long walk…and dark!! You also get a TV with about 30 odd channels, however only BBC World and the movie channel on 20 were any use to us Brits really, there are footiegames on sometimes. There's a small fridge/mini bar stocked
with tinned Heineken (£2), Coke, Fanta, Sprite and Tonic Cans (£1 each) and also Water (70p). These are not part of the all inc. unfortunately. If you use any a man comes round to re-stock, you sign a chit and pay when you depart. Of course, you can get all of these drinks (except Heineken) from the bars as part of your all inc. so we didn't buy any. Air con is very effective and there is also a hairdryer so you don't need to bring one and the use of a mini safe (no charge)
POOLS: 2 huge freeform non heated pools and 1 small heated. During our stay the non heated temp ranged from 20- 22 degrees C, there was rarely anyone in them but they were getting a bit warmer just as we left, we tried them and they are lovely once you have got above tummy level! The heated temp ranged from 25 - 27 degrees C. There are loads of loungers and there is no need to be next to anyone as there is so much space. Don't bother bringing your beach towel, you have a free hire of one from the towel hut. We unfortunately got in the 'missing towel chain', as someone stole our towel off the lounger, we told Osama the pool guy and he said in not so many words….it happens just take someone elses! We did…so, sorry if it was you, but it's a chain and I'm afraid we weren't going to pay £8 for a missing towel!! By the way there is a selection of about 30 paperbacks in the hut so you can exchange your reading material. There's 2 pool bars - no swim up bars. You can get coffee's, waters, beer (local Sakara - very nice, like 5% conti lager), sprite, fanta (beware of orange mouth!!) and spirits/cocktails. The bars are big but there's not much on display so you have to ask what they've got and if they can do a special cocktail for you. If you position yourself in the middle of the pool areas, it's a long walk to a toilet, a bit of bad planning really.
BEACH/SEA: I have never ever seen so many loungers and shades at any complex before, there's hundreds on the beach…far too many for the amount of people staying here, they were only about 20% occupied. Still its nice to have a choice hey. There are 3 beach bars with toilets attached. Again it is bad planning as really only the middle toilets were used as the others were too far away, they would have been better putting some near the pool areas! The Beach is nice, it's a bit shingly but certainly not the best beach (Kenya-Bamburi Beach for me) of worst (Dom Rep - Sosua). It is very private though - you certainly won't get hassled by sellers. The water is very shallow, you can walk out to a shipwreck which looks about a qtr mile out and not have water above your waist. You can see coral and coloured fish without a snorkel. You must wear some kind of shoes though, I wore flip flops and slipped onto what looked liked a pretty black spiny plant, the spines stuck in my toes, it was agony, I found out it was a black sea urchin- BEWARE! I had to hobble all the way back to shore in agony, apparently the spines just fragment when you try to pull them out so you are left with tiny fragments under your skin. I prodded with needles and tweezers for days and hobbled around for the rest of the holiday. I still have redness and itching now, 9 days later.
FOOD & DRINK: 2 main buffet restaurants with a different theme each night i.e. Mediterranean, Asian, English, French, although the themes repeat after a week. Also 2 snack bars for lunch at either end of the pools. We found the food very good, although after a week it got predictable. The food was hot if you stir the pots before you scoop. There are salads, lovely breads, fresh pasta cooked while you wait, carvery and a fabulous array of desserts as always in Egypt. You can always get good old chips if you don't like the foreign stuff! If you like your puds you'll be well happy here. What they don't do well though is fresh fruit - very limited to oranges, apples, grapefruits and melon neither of which were in abundance, very well prepared or presented. If you like fresh fruit go to the Dom Rep if you like Bread and puds go to Egypt. Now, I have to complain; the worst thing about this hotel and where it seriously drops below it 5* rating, is the level of service in the bars and restaurants. When you get to the restaurant 75% of the time you can find a table laid if you turn up after 7:30 you have a problem finding one. But the biggest problem is getting a drink served with your meal. 80% of the time one of the following would happen and I am not exaggerating here! A. You will be ignored during the whole duration of your meal and not asked what drink you would like. B. They will ask you - but the drinks will never arrive. C. The wrong drinks will arrive i.e. white wine instead of red D. Drink will arrive but no glasses or E. You will get you drinks and also someone else's (so they lose out). Very frustrating this and definitely the worst service we have ever received at an all inc. resort. They are also very slow to lay and clear tables. We are not the type to moan though - we are on holiday and just had a laugh about it!! If you were back at home and paying then you would definitely have to complain! However, we didn't really think it was the staff's problem as they are all really nice and seem to be rushing round, it more likely to be an understaffing problem, there's simply not enough to go around - employ more! After talking to a few staff I found out that on average they work 15 hours a day from 7am till 10pm (cleaning) and 11am till 2am (bars) for a pittance. If you tip them £1 it's a hell of a lot almost a days wage I think. You are allowed to dine at 1 a la carte only during your stay as part of the all inc. You book in advance and choose from Italian, Chinese or Lebanese. We tried the Italian - as good as a restaurant at home with fine service and a guitar player - very romantic. It is a set meal and very nouvelle cuisine with elegant small portions…worthy of the 5* status. By the way the all inc. red wine is nice although sweet it's ok for free but couldn't drink a lot of it! The beer is great, cocktails are a bit limited - there is a list in the lobby bar, some are lovely but very filling/fattening as creamy. If you like cocktails the dom rep is great.
ENTERTAINMENT: Egyptian resorts do not do entertainment…well they do….but they are not an entertaining nation. There is a singer in the bar in the evening (dreadful) and we went to the show once which starts at 9:30 (also dreadful, but fun after a few drinks!). A shame because the auditorium is great. A new entertainment team had just come in a couple of days before we left and they looked a bit better. I wouldn't recommend this resort if you like nightlife, if you like to relax, sunbathe, read and like a peaceful, big hotel room then it's great.
FACILITIES: Two great tenniscourts, we took our own racquets and just played until we found out you should book a time slot at the towel hut, nobody tells you this. There are a lot of things that you are not told but you just find out as you go along. A bit more information on the sheet left in the room would be good - not just the opening times of the restaurants. There's a fabulous Spa with a massive approx 30ft x 18ft Jacuzzi, 2 saunas and 2 steam rooms (all inclusive). There's also a shisha pipe smoking room, big outdoor chess, internet access in lobby, table tennis, multi sports pitch and kids play areas. We also used the water slides at the Mirabel park hotel which is joined to this one - nobody tells you this either!
QUOTES FROM STAFF/LOCALS!: 'These towels are genuine Egyptian cotton, not made in China like all your English stuff!....I know' 'Sharm El Sheikh only gets 5 minutes of rain a year!' 'I work 15 hours a day, 7 days a week for 50 days, then I have 6 days off' 'The population of Egypt is 75 million, 25 million live in Cairo' 'Shisha pipe very good - make you very happy - but no good when you are working' '80% of men in Egypt are called Mohammed and 80% are Muslims'
WEATHER: During our stay end Mar/beg Apr the first couple of days were 24 degrees and windy, bit chilly in the evening. As we were leaving the temp has risen to 30 degrees, although it felt hotter. The air is very dry, so if you do any washing or have wet clothes, they will dry in no time. Didn't get any mozzy bites at all, although I seen a few that had some bites, the only insect problem here is flies around the tables/food when you are eating.
TRIPS: This is the biggest tip I can give you from this review. If you want to go on any trips book with Mohammed Ramadan at 'Charm of Sharm' they have a web site www.charmofsharm.co.uk, I do not get commission but I just have to tell you how great they were, they deserve a special mention. After looking on the web site I emailed them and they said just give us a ring when you are on hol and we will come to your hotel. We rung him from the hotel and for your info the 7 minute call to his mobile cost only £2.10, he came to meet us at the hotel reception and he is a really nice guy, he speaks good English and does not pressurize you whatsoever to book anything. We booked the Quad Bikes in the Sinai Desert followed by a Bedouin dinner, 5 hour trip time at a cost of £45 for 2 of us (Thompson price £50 for quad bikes only…they will kill me!!), also 1 hour horse riding at £16 each (from £35 with Thompson) On both these trips we unexpectedly had a private transfer in a taxi, we were expecting a coach load but there was only us from our hotel so they sent a taxi all to ourselves…fantastic. When we initially arrived at Sharm we weren't planning on going to Cairo and the pyramids so we didn't get a visa, we told Mohamed that we couldn't go because of this and he said no problem I'll take you to the airport to get a visa …no charge, how good was that, if it was in England they'd say tough you didn't get your Visa so you cant go unless you get it yourself!! He and his driver picked us up from the hotel and drove to the airport which coincided with a presidential visit!! The airport was absolutely chocker all flights had been delayed awaiting his arrival. We queued up just to park at the airport then Mohammed took us through the airport pushing his way through all the queues, you really couldn't move there but he managed to get visa's for us paying up front in dollars for us cos we didn't have any....how good a service is that and so patient. As I said you wouldn't get that service in the UK! Anyway, the Cairo and pyramids by bus trip cost £42 each (Thompson £77) it was a 25 hour round trip…they don't tell you that!! But it was worth it and an excellent price. We were picked up at 1am from the hotel and returned 2am the next day!! Seen Cairo, the Cairo museum with Tutankhamen's artefacts, then lunch alongside the Nile, the pyramids and a papyrus museum with just the right amount of time spent at each.
ILLNESS: All 4 of us had small problems whilst here. I had a blinding 24 hour long headache. My husband had the runs and headache for half a day. My mum had one bout of sickness and diarrhoea and my Dad had mild niggling stomach pains for the whole duration, didn't stop him eating or drinking beer though!! Neither deterred us from enjoying our holiday. You never know what causes these things - food - dehydration - cleanliness, unfortunately you cannot know what has gone on before you, however, seeing kids lick the food serving tongs and putting finger into food pots to taste them give you a good idea of why you might possibly have been ill!! You can only try not to overeat, drink plenty of water and wash hands all the time….the usual common sense stuff. By the way, don't forget to take paracetemol; we paid £5 for a pack of 20 at the hotel. I told him we can get them for 20p at the superdrug at home and he laughed.
CONCLUSION: A great quality hotel for relaxation; Advantages being the rooms, the space around the complex, the gardens, furnishings, decor and the magnificent spa. Negatives have to be the poor service in the restaurants and sometimes the bars and the poor evening entertainment. In comparison to other package holidays I have taken I would rate this hotel as a very good 4*, we paid £605 for 2 weeks all inclusive which I feel is excellent value. I feel Egypt remains one of the best value all inclusive holidays alongside Tunisia. When comparing the * rating against price, other destinations are more expensive and you don't really get anything more.
