If you've been to Bath, or live there as I do, you'll have noticed that prices are high and getting decent ordinary, unpretentious food can be an obstacle if you want to sit somewhere nice indoors. The Jazz Cafe sets to remedy this by giving us the option of siting in an atmospheric environment and eating some lovely grub for a reasonable price.

Food And Drink

You can eat and drink all sorts of things here. The breakfasts range from various things on toast (including eggs) and light bites to the Jazz Cafe Breakfast - which is a double the usual size full English. That'll sort you out for a day walking around Bath! The quality of meat is good, the bacon's thick and the sausages taste really nice. The cooked breakfasts come with two enormous pieces of toast, beans, egg and - get this - REAL mushrooms! Not tinned! The Full English is around the £4 mark and the Jazz Cafe Breakfast around £5. Yes, a little pricey, but you wont find this amount of food at this quality anywhere else in Bath. Anyway, this means that getting breakfast here is more of a treat than an every day thing.

The lunch and dinner menu caters for those fancying salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps, jacket spuds, and hot dishes such as lasagne, or chilli con carne. The menu is nice and varied and there is always a full specials board in full view, on the back wall. I've had lasange here in the past and it was really tasty, as were the various other meals I've eaten including spicy tiger prawn wraps - my personal favourite so far. This menu is a little more reasonable in terms of price. I've never paid anywhere near a tenner for a meal, which I'm happy with. It's usually come in around the £5-8 mark. Everything that I've had tastes nice and fresh and has good quality ingredients.

There are also desserts, juices, tea, hot chocolate and coffee drinks. You can also buy wine (by the glass) and beer (by the bottle). The hot drinks are a good standard and the coffee is nice - which is certainly not always the case everywhere in Bath.

The Atmosphere

The Jazz Cafe is a relatively small venue, which thanks to close seating can fit in more diners than you'd expect. You'll be seated on sturdy wooden furniture, which adds a nice quirkiness to the place as it doesn't all match. The room is decorated blue and off white, and there are lots of posters of various jazz performers and musical instruments. Personally I like the large picture of Django Reinhardt.

You can sit outside on the edge of the square, if you prefer. If the weather is good it's a nice spot for people watching and enjoying the sunshine without very many cars going past at all.

When and Where

The Jazz Cafe is open from 8am Monday through to Saturday but I'm unsure of closing times, I think this may have changed recently. On Sundays the opening times are 10.30am - 4pm.

The restaurant is located down the road from the main high street that runs through Bath. It's nearest tourist attractions are the Theater Royal and the Roman Baths.
