The hubbub at the hub

Advantages: Atmospheric, energetic, exhilarating
Disadvantages: Aggressive, edgy, exploitative

There is something about the Jemaa el Fna that exerts an almost gravitational pull on the visitor to Marrakech.

This isn't just because everyone knows the Jemaa is the central square and hub of the Medina, Marrakech's old town. It isn't just that the labyrinthine lanes and souks all seem to wind their eventual way to it if you follow them far enough, having retraced your steps systematically whenever - which will be often - you find ...
...time.

The Jemaa el Fna is ancient, so presumably it served some significant purpose even before the tourists came along. The name translates literally as "Assembly (or mosque) of the Dead (or departed)". This is customarily construed to mean that it was a place of execution, with the heads of the decapitated being displayed on spikes around the perimeter as a warning to others, though it could simply mean that it was once ... more

Heart Of The City

Advantages: lots to do
Disadvantages: comes alive more by sunset

While in Marrakech, I stuck to my top 10 guide as everyone seemed to have this book on them but it was definitely necessary as I wasn't sure of major attractions here. One of the main things listed to see if of course the Djemaa El Fna which translates to Assembly of the Dead. It is almost like the town centre as it is the main square where all of the things happen. In the day time this square is not the best place to be as there is no shade with ...
...hitting down on it. The square is where a lot of locals come as well as a lot of tourists. In the daytime the main things you will come across here are the orange juice stalls which is one of the unusual things about Marrakech they charge about 5 Dirham's a glass which is if you're lucky 50p but it is freshly squeezed and in the heat there is nothing more refreshing. However, they are very competitive as there are a few so watch for them getting ...

The New Moroccan Role

Advantages: "Colored cottons hang in the air?"
Disadvantages: "?Charming cobras in the square." (Crosby, Stills and Nash)

It?s your first morning in Marrakech. You?re sitting at a café in the Jemaa el Fna, soaking up the sunshine and the atmosphere while you plan your sight-seeing. I?d like to think you?d decided to start at the Jemaa el Fna by reason of having read my recent review*, but probably you would have found your way there anyway. Most visitors do. It?s well known as the central square and hub of activity in the Medina, Marrakech?s old town, and a sight worth seeing in itself. By no means the only sight worth seeing, though; Marrakech is full of them. It needs to be. These days, tourism is Marrakech?s main industry. For a city set in flat countryside a hundred miles from the sea, this means that it lives on its past ? the architecture, art and ambience accumulated over a thousand years of history. Location ...

Watch out for the snake-poo

Advantages: Very different to anything in Europe, but very close to the UK
Disadvantages: You have to haggle over everything

of the Medina is not open to tourists, but is an impressive building from the outside. All of the other palaces are open to visitors and worth visiting, especially Bahai Palace, a series of ornate riyads and patios. Le Tombeaux Saardiens near the palace are small, but interesting if you near by. The Marrakech Museum, formerly the Mnebhi Palace, is also impressive from an architectural point of view. Shopping Place Jemaa-el-Fna is where most tourist head for shopping in the Souks. These markets are hard work if you don't like having to barter hard for everything although I imagine there are bargains to be found, if you have the stamina. For many people shopping for souvenirs in the souks is one of the main highlights of a trip to Marrakech. Alternatively go to Ensemble Artisanal for some less hassled shopping and possibly better quality ...
