discovered, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africas tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the citys narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africas most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the citys past surface mining that gave rise to the countrys massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as that of the history of Africas native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. Gold Reef City is a large historical theme park that features the Johannesburg of pioneering times and focuses on the clothing, houses and entertainments of the countrys golden years. On display are some of the old mining wagons that the workers used to transport the precious rock fromthe unforgiving mines and theres also a chance to see the liquid gold as it is turned into bullion and processed as gold coins. In contrast to Johannesburg, Pretoria grew at a calmer pace and has developed from a Boer farming municipality into South Africas administrative capital. Located on a hill is the Vortrekker Monument that is a reminder of the Boers Great Trek and, in 1830, the crucial battle in which they defeated the Zulus. Sun City is a magnificent fantasy world full of African ambience and the Sun City Hotel is the casino that made Sol Kerzner the richest man in South Africa, whereas the futuristic Cascades Hotel derived its name from its wonderful setting of waterfalls, pools and lush plant life. Johannesburg and this whole region of South Africa is THE sunshiny place to be!

I visited Johannesburg International Airport about a year ago, and was not disappointed. I was there as I was unfortunate enough to have to spend five hours there, but was it really unfortunate?

Well, I must point out that I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of having to face a quarter of a day in an airport, but what I was glad about was the airport that I was going to have to face it in.
After a long eight-hour flight from London Heathrow (opinion coming soon), me and my family were pretty knackered, and we really just wanted to sleep well. But, there was still a short leg of our journey to Durban left.
We landed after a pleasant flight on board South African Airlines (another op in the pipeline). After disembarking, everything was pretty simple. Unfortunately, the heavens had opened and rain poured.
So, once in the airport, we met some friends, which help make the stop more bearable. But now, more about the airport itself, its advantages and disadvantages.
We had to wait in transit, so we didn't see the whole airport - but we saw nearly all of it and I have spoken to people about the parts that we were unable to view.
There were many seats in this spacious, airy airport. Everywhere you go you will not be left without a place to rest. Most of the airport is air conditioned, so this helps keep passengers from the sweltering heat.
There is a wide selection of places to shop and eat, with many stores selling souvenirs at good prices - giving you a chance to spend all the money you have left over from your visit.
You may want to have a drink at ‘Juicy Lucy.’ But be warned, some of the prices are very steep and you certainly wont find a bank in the facility.
I experienced no delays, and my father, who has visited the airport on many occasions, tells me that check-in is simple, easy-to-use and very quick.
The airport is pretty spotless, and you wont tend to find any nasty germs around on the floor. There are plenty of clean toilets, and lots of bins to keep people from mess-making.
They do have to charge airport tax to keep the place looking nice. But there is only a little that the parrenger pays for directly - most is paid for by the airline through the price of your ticket.
There are great facilities for the disabled at JNB. Ramps and lifts can be found throughout the building, with helpers and complimentary wheelchairs for the disabled. But, one slightly racist thing is that disabled toilets are marked as toilets for the 'Physically Challenged.' I've not heard that one before...
The boarding gates and signs are very clear, helping you find your way around easily – there were large information screens and regular announcements to keep people informed.
It’s a great, simple and easy to use airport. Nothing special, but you wont be upset either.
Advantages: Location, Easy Access, Inexpensive, Historic Disadvantages: Limited availability of rides and attractions to children under 5
A growing number of people make their way to Gold Reef City every year. With the theme park, the apartheid museum and the casino facilities, the complex has shown itself over and over again, as a popular hang out and family fun paradise. Gold Reef City has a theme park that was designed and built right around an authentic 19th century gold mine town. There are restuarants, site seeing tours, history, museums and theme park adventures to enjoy. In ... ...pouring and amusements for your enjoyment. Gold Reef City even has a victorian hotel, dating back from years gone by. The theme park is open on Tuesdays to Sundays, right throughout the year, except for holidays such as Christmas. Good value, good fun and variety are only part of the story behind Gold Reef City's success. Friendly faces, helpful guides and notices, and ample opportunity for rest and refreshment, keep us going back to it.
It is well ...

Advantages: Clean, efficient and easy to navigate Disadvantages: watch out for pick pockets
When a European lands in South Africa, one almost expects dusty landing strips and really third world service. Not so at Johannesburg International Airport.
Disembarking we found that the travellators were all working, the luggage trolleys were new, state of the art complete with a braking system, and huge enough to carry a families luggage.
Our luggage took a while to arrive at the carousel but one makes allowances for this as it is a manual task, ... ...some further toileting facilities could be made more available.
The customs queues were well organised and flowed very smoothly, for locals as well as visitors. In no time at all we passed through the green light under the watchful but not vindicative eye of the customs officials and entered the arrivals hall which was well sign posted and plenty of facilities were found. Hire car companies, taxis and exchange bureau's were on hand and the airport ...
