Go to Malaysia's Lands End

Advantages: Good nightlife; Some attractive buildings, Shopping is quite good
Disadvantages: Traffic jams; Crowded at weekends;

In the headlong rush north many visitors to Malaysia from Singapore through the southern gateway of Johor Bahru overlook the attractions of this bustling,surprising, town. The state capital, however, has quite a offer to those prepared to dwell and seek out its attractions.

Architectural pride of place has to be given to the Sultan Abu Bakar mosque which undeniably ranks amongst the loveliest in Malaysia. ...
...was designed by one Tuan Haji Mohammad Arif; the building was completed in 1900, a few years after the death of Sultan Abu Bakar, the ruler it was named after. The Islamic Centre nearby is a very recent building but it too is a fine modern piece of architecture.

Along Jalan Tun Dr Ismail you cannot miss the imposing Istana Besar - Big Palace - which was built in 1866 by Sultan Abu Bakar, who was frequently referred to as "The ... more

Ipoh, A Very Nice City

Advantages: Clean. Well Planned. Lovely Architecture.
Disadvantages: A long journey from Singapore or Johore Bahru

Although I was born and bred in Johore Bahru, Malaysia, I think I have travelled more widely in England than in Malaysia. Being from Johore Bahru I know that city and neighbouring Singapore very well and I also visited the historic city of Melaka a number of times. Until comparatively recently I had never been to the old Tin Mining Capital of Ipoh- once the second largest city in Peninsular Malaysia.However, A Scottish friend frm Tayport who spends two months in Malaysia every year suggested I visit Ipoh and Kellies Castle which is not far away.Pearl assured me I would like Ipoh. Well I took her advice and accompanied her, my younger sister and her husband on a day tour of Ipoh. I most certainly was impressed with what we saw. The first thing I noticed was how clean Ipoh appears to be-there was little sign of litter and the streets ...

Kuala Lumpur - Singapore train experience

Advantages: Cheap, comfortable and safe !
Disadvantages: Old coaches

at two ends of each coach, no personal TV. There is a buffet coach with seatings but i did not try anything onboard. Hot meals sold consist of fried noodles, instant hot noodles, sandwiches etc. I was told the food sold are more expensive onboard so my friend bought me food before I boarded. One thing that I noticed about the coaches is that the second class seats look newer than the first class seats. The first class seats were made by Hyundai in year 1992 so being more than 10 years old now. The final stop in Malaysia before going into Singapore is Johor Bahru. Here, the train stops for 15 minutes and passengers going into Singapore will have to stay onboard to wait for immigration officers to come onboard and have all passports checked. After the immigration, the train goes on to Woodlands Singapore immigration checkpoint. All ...

Value for Money

Advantages: Value for money, great eatouts
Disadvantages: Not many shopping centres around

Been close to Malaysia is a plus point. I used to live in Singapore and hop over to Malaysia for a weekend breakaway from the overcrowded space in Singapore. Food in Malaysia is superb. Especically seafood, crabs, big prawns at local restaurants at very cheap price for the whole family. Sometimes the restaurants are near the seaside where you enjoy the breeze and enjoy your seafood meals. I've been to Johor Bahru, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Port Dickson and Sabah (east Malaysia). The most enjoyable is Malacca where you can experience the Portuguese culture (Malacca used to be a Portuguese colony). My favourite dish is the spicy and hot sambal chilli Kang Kong (a vegetable). It is so hot that I (usually a chilli eater) had to gulp down several glasses of cold water to prevent my tongue from burning. This dish is one ...
