When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion.
We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal.
The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day. The hotel reception has a luxurious feel and marble abounds. As first impressions count so much we knew we were in for a treat. The receptionist greeted us with typical Amsterdam cheer and smiles. The check-in process was quick and soon we were being portered to our room.
The room itself could have been in any city centre throughout the World - you know the sort, seen one you've seen them all. However, the room was very clean, pleasantly decorated and the bathroom was well equipped with all the usual mod-cons us travellers have come to expect. The information provided by the hotel about the city was second to none and although we had been frequent visitors to Amsterdam we still felt as though we had learnt something from the hotel literature.
The location of the hotel is in the Singel area of the city and is very handy for a spot of shopping in Central Amsterdam. The furthest point we walked to within the city boundaries only took about 15 minutes.
As we had been to Amsterdam before we walked from Centraal Station which also took 15 minutes but on the way back to the station at the end of our trip we took a tram from outside the hotel to the Station which cost approximately 60p for a single journey.
Breakfast is the highlight of staying in any hotel and the Hotel Jolly Carlton did not fail. The beautiful breakfast room (with yet more marble) was situated on the first floor and overlooked a busy street - but with double glazing you could admire the Amsterdammers going about their business in peace. Standard hotel food was on offer in the form of cooked items such as bacon, sausages, eggs and strangely enough - chips.
Every member of staff we came into contact with was extremely pleasant and helped us plan our time accordingly whilst we were there.
On the day we travelled home we left our cases at the hotel under the watchful eye of the porters - the cases were locked away for security - allowing us the last few hours of our break to be luggage free.
Don't be put off by staying in a decent hotel if you are travelling to Amsterdam - they offer excellent deals throughout the year.

Advantages: Good location, near enough to the key sights, far enough away not to get ripped off Disadvantages: None really, slightly 'overrated' at 4* (Probably more a 3)
