Exiled Welshman living in the Scottish Borders. Been a 'recluse' for the last few years converting an old Village Post office into a home.
Finished the place now - got a dirt cheap mortgage - bit of cash saved up - time to get a life !

Just come back from a 3 night stay in the beautiful City of Amsterdam. Decided to stay in the JollyHotel for no other reason than Price, Location, and amenities, as after some significant Internet 'research' the Jolly Hotel seemed to have most of the criteria myself and my wife were looking for. Let's face it, Amsterdam is the place you go for a few days to see the sights, sample the local cuisine or plantlife (depending on your taste), and generally chillout. The Hotel is just the base, a place to crawl back to when you've had too much Heineken. The quality of the restaurant food is almost irrelevent as when you're in a City like Amsterdam the last thing you should be doing is having a meal in the Hotel. So let's look at the criteria I was looking for when I booked :-
Location - The best feature of the Hotel, very close to the Canals, Dam Square, Anne Frank Museum, and the Leidersplein (Hip and Trendy Pubs and Clubs area) Having said that, it's not situated in one of the many 'manic' places in Amsterdam, so you don't get the pushers, drunks, or weirdos hanging about.
Price - We booked through Last minute. com and got a superior room inc breakfast for £100 a night. I would not pay any more than this as the quality of the room though good, was not worth more than £100.
Room - Our room was Air conditioned which was just as well, as we arrived in September to meet temperatures knocking on 30 degrees (A pleasant change from Scotland ). The room was certainly very clean, ample storage place for clothes, and the Bathroom was basically Marble from floor to ceiling - nice touch. There are apparently rooms with impressive views, unfortunately we didn't get one,
Food - Can only really comment on the breakfast as we dined out each night, however pleased to report that the breakfast is very good. Wide range of Cold meats, breads, pastries to get you on your way in the morning. Also plenty of Bacon and Eggs for the traditionalists of us.
Service - Check in was prompt though didn't get a Smoking room as I had requested. Service throughout the stay was fine, concierge was quite happy to look after our bags all day on our final day.
Checkout - They did try charging us both for breakfast, after we'd already pre paid, so like anything - check the bill.
That's about all I can say, we were out of the Hotel more than we were in it.
For our needs the Jolly was absolutely fine, if, or should I say when we go back to Amsterdam, would be more than happy to book again.
Happy travels Taffylad
