Jolly Carlton Hotel - Amsterdam

Advantages: Friendly staff, modern decor, lots of handy facilities, great location
Disadvantages: Rooms are a bit on the small side and cramped

the best available double room when we got to the hotel. The hotel that we had booked was the four star 'Jolly Carlton'. I had a look on the internet and it seemed wonderful. We were told that check in wasn't until 2pm, but when we arrived in Amsterdam in the morning, we though that we would go to the hotel to see if we could leave our luggage there so we didn't have to drag it around the city until 2pm. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the central station, which we managed no problem, even with our luggage. If you don't want to walk then there are also several trams you can take, either from the central station or from the centre of the town, though it really isn't that far and it is a fairly flat road all the way, and it means you can window shop as you walk! The hotel is very easy to find and is along one of the main roads. It ...

Review of Jolly Carlton Hotel, Amsterdam

No longer on the edge of the world...

Advantages: Only two hours away, compact size
Disadvantages: Didn't have long enough there!

the centre of Trieste and, alighting from your chosen mode of transport, you are immediately struck by how well sign-posted things are in Trieste! All the major hotels are sign-posted by name rather than just the word 'hotels' and a graphic indication of a bed. There is also a plethora of signs indicating the museums and churches and just so that you realise that you really are on the edge of western Europe, signs point out the routes to take for Zagreb, Vienna and Ljubljana. Visitors arriving without accommodation can enquire about rooms at the tourist information office situated on via San Nicolo, where the staff speak good English and can also provide you with a wealth of information on the area. I had pre-booked a single room at the Hotel Alabarda where the staff were friendly and welcoming and cheerfully indulged my questionable ...

Review of Trieste (Italy)

Into the bowels of the earth

Advantages: Impressive rock formations, very memorable attraction
Disadvantages: Not suitable for young children or people with limited mobility, not as good as other nearby caves

THE GROTTA GIGANTE? The Grotta Gigante is situated about 15 Kilometres from the Italian city of Trieste, near the border with Slovenia. The area has lots of caves because it is largely limestone; in Slovenian this is known as "kras", in Italian "carso"; as a result, Italians refer to the whole of this region as the "Carso". To get to the cave is easy; it is well signposted for drivers and it can be reached on public transport, either by bus or by tram from the centre of Trieste. There is a small car-park at the visitors' centre, people using public transport should ask the driver where to alight then follow the signs to the cave entrance which is a ten minute walk from the main road. The nearest town is Villa Opicina which, with its good selection of restaurants and hotels, would make a good place to explore the area from. HISTORY ...
