JORDAN - A Tourist's overview
Advantages: Wonderful country, with fantastic scenery and history Disadvantages: Dangerous at present time (Jan '06)
It is a real shame that at present, due to the on-going troubles in the Middle Eastern region, that Jordan is now listed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British Government as suffering from a high risk and threat of terrorism, which has lead to the closure of the British embassy in the capital Amman.
I write a review though as a point of interest and with the hope that if things change in the Middle East, tourists from the West will ... ...historic country.

Background

I visited The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, as it is officially known, prior to the 9/11 atrocities in June 2001, on a Pan-European trip of approximately 50 tourists from the UK, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Local ground handler UTA Jordan where responsible for organising our visit and acting as guides throughout the 6 day whistle stop tour of this fantastic country.

Aqaba - nice place to visit
Advantages: Good shopping, great beach Disadvantages: Traffic a bit chaotic, bit of hassle if you are women on your own
I went to Aqaba in Jordan in the month November as part of a cruise on the Thomson Celebration. It was the first destination on the itinerary and we were scheduled to spend two days docked there.
We made our way in to the town to do some souvenir shopping on the first morning and found it to be a bustling area with loads of little shops where you could pick up some great bargains. The shop owners nearly all spoke great English and in one shop we ... ...cash.
The roads in Aqaba are quite chaotic, and never assume that a car will stop just because you are on a crossing. Sometimes you just have to see your opportunity and run.
You do kind of get hassled in certain places, for us it was when we got off the shuttle bus and we had lots of offers from taxi drivers to take us to Petra. A firm "thanks but no thanks" usually works and once we were in the town we weren't bothered so much.
The weather was ...

Dead Sea Movenpick
Advantages: Float in the Dead Sea Disadvantages: Have to pay hotel prices as no local shops
...for 5 days at the Dead Sea resort of the Movenpick which is longer than the average tourist but we wanted to have more time to relax at the end of a hectic tour of Jordan.
The hotel is stunning and attracts a large number of tourists from the Middle east and Europe. It has a number of restaurants and some small shops and quite extensive English language library. ( I borrowed Shane Ritchies autobiography!)
It has a luxurious spa reasonable well ... ...few days bathing in the Dead Sea.
For anyone wanting to visit the Dead Sea but are wary of doing so via Israel, Jordan is a great alternative. We felt safe throughout our travels in Jordan.
The only disadvantage was that most of the hotels are purely resort hotels and there is very little to do other than swim/float in the Dead Sea. Consequently you have to pay hotel prices to eat and drink which can be costly.
The cost of staying here is about ...

Kerak
Advantages: Fantastic Castle, Beautiful Views Disadvantages: None
...only one reason to visit Kerak and that is to visit the cruasader castle that winds around the top of the hill and encircles the marjority of Kerak.
The crusader castle has one main area to visit which can be accessed near the government rest house (which is ok for lunch), entry is 1JD per person. However, the castle does crop up all around Kerak with some of the buildings using one of the walls as an exterior.
The castle is quite run down although ... ...up and scramble over.
Kerak lies along the old King's Highway which runs through Madaba and down to Petra. The King's Highway used to be Jordan's main thoroughfare from north to south, however the Dessert Highway is now used as a quicker route as is the Dead Sea road through Wadi Araba. As a result of this Kerak is often missed off the the tourists list of things to do - if you have the time visit Kerak and drive out of Kerak north along the King's ...
