I wanted a twin room in a hotel that looked easy to find, was close to nightlife and wasn't a complete dump i.e. 3 stars plus. A hotel for a one night golf getaway with a mate is a bit different to the sort of hotel you may want to book with the wife or partner. The typical one night golf stay follows this format: 1 - argue over who has which bed, 2 - change, 3 - go straight out, 4 - get back and fall onto the bed covered in kebab sauce, 5 - wake up at 5 am dehydrated, stagger into the bathroom turning every light in the room on accidentally, get shouted at by other person. 6 - get into bed, 7 - what seems like 2 seconds later wake up, realise you are going to miss your tee off time, 8 - panic.
In the interests of our budget I emailed the hotel manager to ask him what was the best deal he could do for us. His assistant manager replied pretty quickly and offered us a twin for £79 for the night, no breakfast.
This didn't seem to be a great deal to me as this was more expensive than the £69 advertised on their website.
After comparing prices on a few hotel room booking sites I found a deal for £63 on Laterooms.com and booked it via Quidco to get £3.78 cashback
The Thrifty review will appear on Ciao shortly as it was a bit of an experience.
We found getting to the hotel quite straightforward, its at the bottom of Jamaica Street, near the river bridge.
From the airport it took us about 10 minutes to drive.
*** Parking ***
Its a shame that the hotel doesn't have its own car park, we used the NCP in Howard Street. We had to carry bags and golf clubs from the multi-story car park to the hotel. It is only about 100 yards but if it was late at night we wouldn't really want to have been wandering in a strange city struggling with carrying best part of £2000 worth of gear.
As it was we left the clubs in the car, not because we were worried about being mugged but purely because we couldn't be bothered to carry them! I am glad to say they were still there in the morning.
The car park fee is £10 for 24hours but when we checked out the girl behind the desk asked where we were parked and offered to swipe the ticket so we would get £4 off.
*** Checking in ***
On arrival there were 3 girls behind the desk, 2 were busy and the other one called me over. While I was checking in the duty manageress came over and using my name asked if I needed any help with anything or any information. The checking in process was very quick and pleasantly done and all the info I needed was volunteered without having to ask anything.
The check in girl asked if there were 3 staying in the room which I found a bit odd so I said no, just 2. When I got home later and checked my emails I did find out that I had for somehow booked a room for 3 but as the price was for the room, not per person it was no biggie.
Breakfast vouchers for £7 each (or £7.50, cant remember now) were offered which would save paying £10.50 in the morning.
The hotel has a cocktail bar and restaurant. We wanted to explore the bars and nightlife in the city centre so didn't use either of these. They both looked a bit quiet but it was a monday night.
*** The Room ***
On entry I quickly baggsied the double bed and left my mate with the single. The staff had put another smaller single in the room for the non-existent 3rd person.
The room was a decent size with not a bad view over the river. It had a spacious bathroom with over the bath shower, tea/coffee making facilities and a TV with satellite channels.
The room was clean, well furnished and the beds were comfortable.
There were none of the usual freebies in the room, no shortbread or biccies, moisturiser, shoe polish etc. Shower gel and soap were in squeezy bottles attached to the walls.
Ice was available free from a machine on each floor but no drinks available when we got back to the room at 3 am. The concierge very kindly gave me a can of coke FOC.
*** Breakfast ***
Not thinking I would be up in time for brekkie I didn't buy the voucher the night before so walked a short distance up the road to Wetherspoons who were advertising breakfasts for £2.69. Unfortunately they had kitchen problems and couldn't do me a fry up so back to the hotel.
I have to say that it was a pretty decent breakfast, just what you would expect really: A good selection of fruit and cereals, full cooked breakfast buffet with fried or scrambled eggs. Very nice.
*** Location ***
Very handily located and just a couple of minutes walk from the town centre.
*** Checkout ***
Very quick, no problems. It was only later on after we had left that we saw we had paid £1 for a daily telegraph which we never got. Maybe a light-fingered resident nicked it from outside our room before we got up.
*** Summary ***
I was very happy with this hotel and would recommend it for a short stay in Glasgow. Shop around for prices, make sure you get your paper, don't forget your toiletries.
