I have gained the travel bug in the last few years and have had the chance to discover many new and wonderfull places. Some I have already written about and the others no doubt I will get round to them at some point.
I enjoy many forms of music and...
The first leg was on a Fokker regional jet, there was only one class but there was reasonable leg room and the snack was not overly generous but still tastey – cold roll. cheese and cake.
The main journeys were in a Boeing 747. I thought I had it planned in that having travelIed on a similar plane a couple of years ago I would go for one of the back rows where it cut from 3 rows to 2 at the windows. Unfortunately this plane was a different seating configuration and it was 3 abreast all the way back. The legroom was average for economy although a couple of people were lucky enough to have the centre section to themselves and created a comfy bed for themselves. The seats, as is common on many planes had "head wings" to support your head and were quite comfortable. In flight entertainment was supplied with seat back LCD screens and a limited supply of movies to watch.
The level of service was above average with typical Dutch hospitality and friendliness. The main meals were typical airline food though, nothing special but still eadible. One amusing sight was the choice of early morning snack, a choice between a “pot noodle” or a chocolate ice cream ! I could understand one or the other but the choice, ah well.
Schipol is one of the nicer airports to transfer though however, it is sometimes subject to delays going in and out. Although supposedly not as bad this year, it did have a terrible reputation for losing or delaying luggage. But this fortunately didnt happen to me. My luggage was booked straight through so no carting it around, yipee !
On the way back as is normal it was an almost midnight departure. I turned up around 3 hours early purely because of the timing of the bus to the airport and I found myself being upgraded to business class. The difference is startling, access to the lounge and complimentary snacks and drinks before boarding. A drink served prior to take off, a choice of meals all the way home which could be ordered. Personal seat side LCD screen with more channels, bottles of water for the night, pre landing gift etc. But the main difference is in the leg room. In economy, I can move my bum forward and my knees will touch the seat back in front, in business, I had my leg straight out and I still could not touch the seat in front. The seat then folded out to be a reclining bed ( probably about 45 degrees or so )
If for no other reason I would upgrade for the extra leg room on any flight more than 5 hours, if you are going over 10 hours then I would seriously recommend considering it. Of course they could always give economy a couple of extra inches but then that would take away the incentive to upgrade, wouldn’t it ! Or am I just being cynical ?
But having said all that, KLM is still a very pleasant and good value way to fly the world and would recommend it.
I've booked my trip to Malaysia with KLM. Interesting to read your opinion - especially the comment about lost luggage. I have allowed ample time in Amsterdam so that hopefully my luggage will travel with me - unlike my brother whose luggage always seems to arrive after him!

An excellent opinion on what sounds like a very good airline. Cheers, Timmy.

KLM operate 747s with smaller passenger compantments than other airlines because they also operate as mixed freighter aircraft. Good opinion. Best regards Barry
