I have used KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for several years now and have not yet been disappointed. Granted, I use them for practical reasons because they are cheap and because the journey time is shorter than flying the same routes with British Airways, but that's beside the point.
From start to finish, KLM really does try to make things as simple and easy as possible.
Booking KLM are a very popular airline now, even more so now that they are flying into more regional airports, and operating services such as Cityhopper and KLMUK. Therefore, it is always best to book as early as possible. Book via their website or via some of the other online cheap travel engines (opodo, expedia etc) as this will allow you greater flexibility and personal preferences such as seating, meals etc. Also, I'd recommend you take out their flying blue card, if only because it'll get you priority at the airport over the other passengers and entitles you to 5kg more baggage allowance. You also get a better and faster services in the event that there is a delay or other all-passenger-affecting problem.
KLM serve a large number of coutries and many regional and local destinations. Therefore chances are you'll get as near to your final destination as you're likely to get. Their partner airlines are also reasonably good, although Kenya airways does need some improvement when it comes to customer service and care.
AT the airport It's best to go the airport as early as possible after checkin opens, as this way you are likely to get the seats you want and more attention to the preferences you want. KLM are very good about you changing seats etc, especially if you have children or are disabled. You are also likely to get an upgrade if you have a valid reason for it i.e. medical reasons, a particular occasion etc. KLM are quite lax about your baggage weight, so if you are a few kilos over, it's no big deal. Make the staff aware of any disabilities you may have - they are very sympathetic and will do everything they can to assist, including pre-boards and personal attention. They even have Braille safety cards and documentation.
On the plane KLM operate a range of aircraft, including a new fleet of B777-300 aircraft for long-haul asia-pacific routes. Seating in economy is adequate, not too cramped but not overly spacy. The entertainment is very good, however most aircraft do not have personal tv screens (as emirates do). I'm not sure about laptop power, but I assume they probably have it now as most airlines do. Food is of a high standard and there is at least 2 or 3 different sections on the economy menu. You are free to ask for drinks etc at any time and the staff never show any impatience (even for those night-owls like me who ask for things at 3am). The KLM magazine is interesting reading, although a bit too Dutch-Dutch-centric. Otherwise the flight is good and nothing to complain about.
Punctuality KLM have an on-time departure policy for flights originating at Amsterdam which is very strictly enforced. For other airports it is dependent on the individual captain. Some routes even have a tendency to depart early, if all passengers are accounted for. This is nothing to complain about though. KLM have a very good reliability record, so there is really nbothing to fear from that.
Overall Overall KLM are a good choice of airline, both in terms of economical, comfort and reliability terms. The only thing to watch out for is that they do overbook their flights, so try to book early and get to checkin on time. KLM also tend to have a number of special offers that run on a fairly regular basis, particularly inter-europe flights, so check their website often.
