I went to Kaikoura for 1 week in between arriving in Christchurch and spending a second week in Christchucrch.
Kaikoura is north of Christchurch on the eastern coast of the south island. Kaikoura has snow capped mountains on the inland side and beautiful ocean on the coastal side offering variety all in the same place!
Whilst in Kaikoura we stayed in the AdelphiLodge which is a extremly high quality backpackers hostel. The hostel is situated right on the sea front amongst several shops, restaurants, and pubs. The Adelphi Lodge is an incredibly beautiful hostel. Rooms in the lodge range from $23 (£10) per person per night to $65 (£30) per person per night. All the rooms are extremly high quality and bed linnen is provided in all rooms. Some rooms are en suite and some have a shared bathroom. The shared bathrooms are clean and fresh and the rooms are spacious, well furnished and cosy. The Adelphi Lodge is run by Judie and Cathal who are english, and relocated to Kaikoura in New Zealand. Judie and Cathal are very friendly and accomodating, they even leant us their van so we could drive to the big supermarket to shop! The Adelphi Lodge has spacious kitchens which are cleaned daily, cutlery and crockery are also available as well as cupboard and fridge space for guests to use. There is a communal lounge with a television equipped with sky, a pool table, a guitar, and computers which cost $1 (40p) for 30 minuites. In the reception area there are lots of leaflets and information booklets about what to do in the local area and there is also a phone booth. Washing machines and dryers are available for use. If you were looking for somewhere to stay in Kaikoura then i would really advise staying in the Adelphi Lodge, we actually cryed when we had to leave as it felt so much like home and we made such good friends.
So, what can you do in Kaikoura i here you ask? Well Dolphin swimming in one of the main attractions in Kaikoura, the cost is about $80 dollars per person and all equiptment is provided. To get to the dolphin swimming reception you turn right out of the Adelphi Lodge and walk for about 15 minuites straight up the road! Also available is whale watching, this requires a short journey which we hired a taxi for, $10 dollars each way. The whale watching involves going up in an 8 seatered light aircraft and flying over the bay on the lookout for whales. When you locate one the plane flys as low as possible to get you a good view of it. This is an absolutly amazing experience and the cost was approx $90 per person. We went caving, which was about a half an hour walk away from kaikoura but an absolutly brilliant experience, the cost was approximatly $15 each and was very intresting. We also went on a 2 hour argo tour right from in the countryside of Kaikoura right out to the coast line. This was a very bumpy, dusty yet amazing expereince!
Actually on the Kaikoura high street there are many shops and restaurants. There is a small supermarket, which is open on christmas say! There are a few clothes shops, a few souvenir shops, a few surf style shops, a chemist, a post office and 2 banks. There are lots of restaurants about including traditional seaside fishy food and indian restaurants.
Kaikoura has lots of lovely beaches. Right opposite the Adelphi Lodge is a beach which is perfect for sunbathing, but if you want to go in the sea then walk about 20 mins down the coast to an area of water where sharks are not a risk! the beaches are sandy but have a few stones on them.
If you are going to the south island on New Zealand then please please go to Kaikoura! It is so beautiful and so friendly. I cannot reccomend it enough!
